Jose Mourinho Profile

Mourinho wanted to go ahead like his father and become a professional football player; therefore, he joined the Belenenses youth team. Promoting to the senior level, he played at Rio Ave (under his father), Belenenses, and Sesimbra. Lacking the needed pace and power, he failed to turn into a professional player, and finally chose to concentrate on becoming a football coach instead. Jose attended coaching courses held by the English and Scottish Football Associations thereafter, and was applauded by former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh, because of his motivation and attention to detail.

His playing career lasted seven years, with less than a hundred appearances in Portugal domestic leagues for him. After the end of his adventure as a football player, Jose Mourinho became a school coach. However, he left the job, seeking a way to enter the professional world of football managers. He served as youth team coach at Vitória de Setúbal, assistant manager at Estrela da Amadora, and scout at Ovarense in the early years of his managerial career.

In 1992, Jose Mourinho faced a great opportunity on his way. Bobby Robson, who had been newly appointed as the new manager of Sporting CP club, needed an English-speaking local coach to work as his translator. This was a desirable situation for Jose to discuss tactics with the well-known Bobby Robson. Robson was sacked by the club in December 1993 and was appointed by Porto the next year. Jose Mourinho moved with him, doing the same job at the new club.

After two years at Porto, Robson and Mourinho moved again to

Barcelona

. Mourinho and his family moved to the city of Barcelona, and his role gradually became more and more important in the club’s staff, as he translated at press conferences, planned training sessions, and gave tactical advice to players. The partnership was fruitful and Barcelona finished the season by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España.

Robson left Barcelona the following season, but this time he did not see his partner alongside him. Jose Mourinho remained in Spain, as Barcelona wanted him to retain and continue his job as an assistant manager. Mourinho later said about the effect of Bobby Robson on him: “One of the most important things I learnt from Bobby Robson is that when you win, you shouldn't assume you are the team, and when you lose, you shouldn't think you are rubbish.”

Staying at Barcelona, Mou began working with Robson's successor, Louis van Gaal, and he learned much from the Dutchman. Again, the partnership was working at the club, and Barcelona won La Liga twice in Van Gaal's first two years as coach. Due to Jose’s abilities and motivation, Van Gaal let him develop as an independent coach and entrusted him with the coaching duties of Barcelona B.

In September 2000, Mourinho moved up from his previous role at

Benfica

and replaced manager Jupp Heynckes after the fourth week of the Primeira Liga. He found this golden chance, while it seemed that Toni Oliveira would be the new manager of Benfica. Jose refused to have Jesualdo Ferreira as his right-hand man, and picked Carlos Mozer, a retired Benfica defender, instead.

Jose Mourinho describes Louis van Gaal’s reaction to his probable return to Portugal. “When I spoke with Van Gaal about going back to Portugal to be an assistant at Benfica, he said: “No, don't go. Tell Benfica if they want a first-team coach you will go; if they want an assistant you will stay.””

Mourinho was doing well as Benfica first-team coach. However, Benfica's election changed almost everything. The newly elected Manuel Vilarinho would prefer Toni Oliveira to be his new coach. Jose Mourinho asked for a contract extension, but Vilarinho refused the demand and Mourinho resigned from his position immediately. He left the club after just nine league games in charge.

In July 2001, Mourinho started working at União de Leiria. During his time at the club, the team was on a run contesting places as high as third and fourth. His effort at the small club was being noticed by larger Portuguese clubs. Finally, in the mid-season period and while União de Leiria were at the third place of the table ahead of Benfica and

Porto

, the latter decided to sign him and sack Octávio Machado.

Mourinho took over at the devastated team and started with the best possible results, leading the club to the third place at the end of the season. He quickly identified then Porto players whom he needed, and also opted to sign some other ones like Maniche, Nuno Valente, Derlei, Paulo Ferreira, and Pedro Emanuel.

You cannot imagine a better first started season for Jose Mourinho at Porto. He won his first Primeira Liga with a huge record, 11 points clear of Benfica. He truly responded to the rival club and their president, who had not extended jose’s contract with Benfica two years earlier. Mourinho’s Porto won 86 points out of the possible maximum of 102 that season, which was a record in the Portugal top flight league, since the rule of three points per win was introduced.

Mourinho also won the Taça de Portugal, beating former club Leiria in the final, and the UEFA Cup final against Celtic.

This was not the most victorious season for Jose Mourinho at Porto. There were still things to be won by Jose and his excellent team. Porto participated in two one-match Super Cups. They won the domestic one, beating Leiria 1–0, while they lost the European one, the UEFA Super Cup, 1–0 to Milan. The team was dominant in the Primeira Liga and finished the season with a perfect home record, securing the title five weeks before the end of the season

Porto lost the 2004 Taça de Portugal Final to Benfica in May 2004, but two weeks later, Mourinho won the UEFA Champions League, with a 3–0 win over Monaco in Germany. The club had eliminated Manchester United, Lyon and Deportivo de La Coruña on the road of getting to the Final. They only suffered one defeat at the entire season of UEFA Champions League.

At the end of the season, Mourinho joined

Chelsea

after receiving a large offer from Roman Abramovich. In a press conference after joining the Chelsea, Mourinho spoke on the club’s credentials, saying, “We have top players and, sorry if I'm arrogant, we have a top manager", before adding. Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion and I think I'm a special one.”

Ahead of Mourinho’s first season, Chelsea spent £70 million in transfer window on players such as Tiago from Benfica, Michael Essien from Lyon, Didier Drogba from Marseille, Mateja Kežman from PSV, and Porto pair Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira. Mourinho triumphed his first trophy with Chelsea, by winning the League Cup against Liverpool in Cardiff.

Chelsea met Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16, a highly contested match where the Blues lost away in the first leg 2–1 but advanced on aggregate, winning at home 4–2. However, he finally failed to win the UEFA Champions League in two consecutive seasons, as Chelsea were knocked out of the competition by a controversial goal in the semi-finals by eventual winners Liverpool.

Despite failing to reach the UCL Final, Chelsea won their first top-flight domestic title in 50 years with Jose Mourinho. They set a variety of English football records that season, including the most points ever achieved in the Premier League (95) and the fewest goals conceded (15).

Chelsea started the next season through defeating Arsenal to win the 2005 FA Community Shield, and topped the Premier League from the very first weekend of the season. Chelsea won their second consecutive Premier League title, which was considered as Mourinho's fourth domestic title in a row.

The 2006–07 season saw growing media speculation that Mourinho would leave the club at the season's conclusion. Having a poor relation with Roman Abramovich, Mourinho later declared that there would only be two ways for him to leave Chelsea: if Chelsea were not to offer him a new contract at the end of then contract, and if Chelsea were to sack him.

Chelsea won the League Cup again by defeating Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium. In May 2007, Liverpool once again eliminated Mourinho’s side from the Champions League, on penalties at Anfield. Chelsea also failed to win the Premier League race, so that was the first season of not winning a league title for Jose Mourinho in five years.

Mourinho’s Chelsea won Manchester United in the 2007 FA Cup Final, and booked their names as the winners of the first final to be played at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium. This was his first FA Cup win which meant that he had won every possible and available domestic trophy as a Premier League manager.

In the first match of the 2007–08 season, Chelsea set a new record of 64 consecutive unbeaten home matches in the Premier League. However, the start of the season was not the kind of thing the club and fans wanted.

Mourinho unexpectedly left Chelsea on 20 September 2007, as the most successful manager in Chelsea's history, having won six trophies for the club in three years, and remaining undefeated in all home league games. Avram Grant replaced Mourinho as Chelsea manager but failed to win any trophies in his year in charge.

In June 2008, Mourinho was appointed by

Inter Milan

as the head coach and the successor of Roberto Mancini. Having spoken about previously, Mourinho bought only three new players to Inter throughout the summer transfer window: Brazilian winger Mancini, Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari, and Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma.

In his first season as Inter head coach, Mourinho won the Supercoppa Italiana, beating Roma on penalties, and finished top of Serie A. Inter, however, were kicked out from the UEFA Champions League, losing 2–0 on aggregate to Manchester United in the first knock-out round of the competition. He also failed to win the Coppa Italia.

Despite winning the Scudetto by a 10-point margin, Mourinho's first season in Italy was called a disappointment by some Inter fans, as they expected a great improve at the club in comparison with the Roberto Mancini era. Mourinho also caused controversies, while facing the Italian press and media, as well as some Serie A coaches, including Carlo Ancelotti, Luciano Spalletti, and Claudio Ranieri.

On 16 May 2009, Inter secured their Serie A title triumph after Milan lost to Udinese. Nerazzuri would eventually finish the season 10 points clear of Milan.

Ahead of the 2009-10 season, Mourinho signed Argentine striker Diego Milito, Thiago Motta, Wesley Sneijder, and the Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o, who was exchanged with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In order to solve the lack of creativity which was named as the reason of Champions League failure, Inter signed Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder from Real Madrid.

Inter lost the Supercoppa to Lazio 2–1. Mourinho's team improved dramatically after that. In April 2010, José Mourinho was named the first manager in history to take three different teams to the semi-finals of the Champions League. This was also Inter’s first UCL semi-finals in seven years.

On 5 May, Inter won the Coppa Italia, defeating Roma 1–0, and eleven days later, the team beat Siena 1–0 to secure the domestic double, with Mourinho reaching again the milestone of winning all trophies available for a manager in a club. On 22 May 2010, Inter won the 2010 Champions League after beating Bayern Munich 2–0. While securing the first treble of Italian clubs, Mourinho won his second title at UEFA Champions League.

On 28 May 2010, it was confirmed that Mourinho would take over at

Real Madrid

. He signed a four-year contract and became the 11th manager in the past seven years at the club. By the end of the 2010 summer transfer window, Mourinho had brought four new players to the squad: Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil, Ricardo Carvalho, and Ángel Di María. Mourinho's Real Madrid were massively defeated in his first Clásico experience against Barcelona, as the match ended 5–0 to the Catalans.

On 22 December 2010, Mourinho’s side won 8-0 over Levante, his career’s widest margin in a victory. In April 2011, Mourinho won his first trophy in Spanish football as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 1–0 in the Copa del Rey final. It was Real's first trophy since their 2007–08 La Liga title and their first Copa del Rey title after 18 years. The same season, Real Madrid were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League semi-finals by Barcelona.

In the 2011-12 season, Real Madrid, under Mourinho, won their first La Liga title in four years, setting the record of most games won in a La Liga season (32), most away wins (16), most points obtained in any of the top European leagues (100), the most goals scored (121) and the highest goal difference. Mourinho's side advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second consecutive year, and they failed to reach the Final match again.

On 22 May 2012, Mourinho signed a new four-year contract to remain as Real Madrid manager through to 2016. Real Madrid won the 2012 Supercopa de España on the away goals rule after a tie of 4–4 on aggregate against Barcelona. This meant Mourinho had won every domestic title available for a manager in the Spanish top division within two years. He also became the only coach to win the national super cups in four European countries. This also made the Portuguese the first manager of all time to win every domestic title in four European leagues.

Real Madrid reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the third consecutive year under Mourinho's management. However, they eliminated for the third time.

In the post-game press conference after the second leg with Dortmund, Mourinho declared that the 2012–13 season with Real Madrid would be his last, saying, “I am loved by some clubs, especially one. In Spain it is different, some people hate me, many of you in this [press] room.” Mourinho's poor relationships with Sergio Ramos and club captain Iker Casillas caused divisions between fans. Mourinho called the 2012–13 season the worst of his career, after the Copa del Rey final loss to Atlético Madrid.

In June 2013, Mourinho was appointed as Chelsea manager for the second time, on a four-year contract. Mourinho told Chelsea TV, “In my career I've had two great passions – Inter and Chelsea – and Chelsea is more than important for me. It was very, very hard to play against Chelsea, and I did it only twice which was not so bad. Now I promise exactly the same things I promised in 2004 with this difference to add: I'm one of you.”

In April 2014, Mourinho ultimately suffered his first ever home league defeat as Chelsea manager. Chelsea finished third in the 2013–14 Premier League season, four points behind champions Manchester City. They were eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2013–14 Champions League by Atlético Madrid, fourth consecutive season for Jose to suffer the same thing.

Chelsea signed Diego Costa, Cesc Fàbregas, and Thibaut Courtois ahead of the 2014-15 season. On 1 March 2015, Chelsea defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2–0 in the League Cup final to claim their first trophy since return of Mourinho to the Stamford Bridge. Later that season, Chelsea were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 after losing to Paris Saint-Germain on away goals.

On 3 May 2015, Chelsea became Premier League champions with three games to spare. Following the victory, Mourinho was selected as Premier League Manager of the Season.

In August 2015, Mourinho signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea. However, losing 9 of 16 Premier League matches and being eliminated from the League Cup, Chelsea parted company with the Portuguese manager.

On 27 May 2016, Mourinho signed a three-year contract with

Manchester United

. Less than three months later, Mourinho won his first trophy with the Red Devils. They won the FA Community Shield, beating reigning Premier League champions Leicester City. Later that season, Manchester United won Southampton in the EFL Cup Final at Wembley.

With the victory, Mourinho became the first manager in the history of Manchester United to win a major trophy in his first season. Manchester United also won the Europa League that season. The title maintained Jose’s 100% record of winning every major European Cup final as a manager.

In the 2017-18 season, Manchester United finished second in the table, finishing nineteen points behind Manchester City. They also lost the 2018 FA Cup Final to Chelsea. Winning just seven of the first 17 Premier League games, Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United in the last days of 2018.

Almost one year after leaving Manchester United, Mourinho was appointed as the manager of

Tottenham Hotspur

, replacing Mauricio Pochettino. In the Champions League round of 16, Mourinho’s Tottenham lost both first and second leg matches and eliminated by RB Leipzig. Mourinho finished his first season with Tottenham Hotspur at sixth position in the Premier League.

Style of Play

Jose Mourinho is an adaptable person to different situations. He is used to play with three or more central midfielders, in order to make an advantage against rivals.

Mourinho himself explained: “Look, if I have a triangle in midfield – Claude Makélélé behind and two others just in front – I will always have an advantage against a pure 4–4–2 where the central midfielders are side by side. That's because I will always have an extra man. It starts with Makelele, who is between the lines. If nobody comes to him he can see the whole pitch and has time. If he gets closed down it means one of the two other central midfielders is open. If they are closed down and the other team's wingers come inside to help, it means there is space now for us on the flank, either for our own wingers or for our full-backs. There is nothing a pure 4–4–2 can do to stop things.”

Mourinho is also known for his attention to details, and his quick reactions to what happens on the pitch. He is a perfect manager in making a physical and aggressive team, which can beat every skillful rival, as his Inter did against the golden generation of Barcelona in 2010.

Reception

Mourinho is arguably one of the best managers of not only his generation, but also all time. In 2010, Pep Guardiola entitled him as "probably the best coach in the world". Frank Lampard has named Mourinho the best manager he has ever worked with.

However, there is not all about applauding Mourinho. There have been some pundits who criticized his view on football. In 2011, Morten Olsen stated that he doesn't "like his persona or the way he plays football negatively". Moreover, Johan Cruyff said: “Mourinho is a negative coach. He only cares about the result and doesn't care much for good football.”

Goal Celebration

As a manager, he has not a specific kind of celebration, but he has figured several controversial goal celebrations at the touchline, which will not be forgotten. One of his most remembered moments after goals was his behavior at Anfield, when Steven Gerrard slipped and Demba Ba found the net. That Mourinho and Chelsea victory resulted in Liverpool’s failure on the way of crowning the Premier League.

is Roman Catholic. He has said: “I believe totally, clearly. Every day I pray; every day I speak with Him. I don't go to the church every day, not even every week. I go when I feel I need to. And when I'm in Portugal, I always go.”

Family, Children and Relationships

Jose Mourinho’s wife is Matilde "Tami" Faria, who was born in Angola. They first met each other when they were teenagers in Setúbal. Finally, they married in 1989. In spite of being dedicated to football, Mourinho believes that his family is the centre of his life. He earned £22,000 for the charity by donating his "lucky" jacket to Tsunami Relief. Since 2014, he acts as a Global Ambassador of the United Nations' World Food Program.

Legal Issues

In 2015, there was a conflict between Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro. The conflict arose following the 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Swansea. In the dying moments of the game, with Chelsea down to 10 men having had their goalkeeper sent off, Dr Carneiro and the team physiotherapist were called on to the pitch by the referee to treat Eden Hazard.

In the post-match press conference, Mourinho expressed his anger that the medical staff’s “hasty” actions had effectively reduced his side to 9 men and called them “impulsive and naïve”. The former Chelsea team doctor decided to claim constructive dismissal against the club and also has a separate but connected case against Mourinho for alleged victimization and discrimination.

Additionally, In 2019, BBC reported that José Mourinho has agreed a prison term in Spain for tax fraud but will not go to jail. A one-year prison sentence will instead be exchanged for a fine of €182,500 (£160,160). That will be added to a separate fine of €2m.
