Fonte: Ronaldo would benefit most from a return to Real Madrid

Jose Fonte thinks it would be best for Cristiano Ronaldo to go back to Real Madrid because he doesn't know what will happen with Manchester United.

Jose Fonte

, who plays for

Portugal

, thinks the best thing for

Cristiano Ronaldo

to do would be to go back to

Real Madrid

.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has reportedly asked to leave Manchester United after only one season back at Old Trafford after moving from Juventus.

Even though Ronaldo scored 24 goals for United during the 2021-22 season, the team only finished sixth in the Premier League and didn't make it into the

Champions League

. Ronaldo was supposed to go back to training on Monday, but because of a family matter, he was given more time off. This means that he will miss the club's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, which is set to start on Friday.

This has led many people to think that the 37-year-second old's stint with the Red Devils is almost over. There were rumors that the Portugal captain would move to Bayern Munich, but the club's CEO, Oliver Kahn, said that the Bundesliga champions would not get in touch.

But Ronaldo's international teammate Fonte thinks the best thing for him would be to go back to Madrid. Ronaldo won four Champions Leagues and two LaLiga titles with

Los Blancos

between 2009 and 2018. He also scored 450 goals for the club, making him the all-time top scorer.

Fonte, a defender for Lille who was on the Euro 2016-winning Portugal team with Ronaldo, told talkSPORT: "I do know that he loves the Champions League, though.

"He thinks it's the best competition in the world, and he knows what he needs to do to win the Ballons d'Or. He needs to win trophies and be in the running for trophies to get the Ballon d'Or. Everyone knows that he always wins. He might look at the United team and wonder, "Will I be able to win any trophies this year?" Maybe he doesn't believe it. I'm not sure. He alone knows. Was he going to return to Madrid? For him, that would be the best. Whether or not they want him back is a different question."
