Olympique Lyon's Maxwel Cornet joins Burnley F.C.

Burnley have completed Maxwel Cornet's acquisition from French side Lyon at an estimated £12.9 million (€15 million).

Maxwel Cornet

has signed a five-year deal with Burnley after leaving

Ligue 1

team, Lyon.

Last term, Cornet, who can start on the wing or left-back, appeared 36 times in France's top division, starting 29 of them.

Only Memphis Depay (12) and Karl Toko Ekambi (six) had more assists and goals than him as Lyon lost out on qualification for the Champions League by two points.

Only Dwight McNeil (five) had more league assists than Cornet last season among Burnley players, and only three of the Clarets' squad – Ashley Westwood (34), Matthew Lowton (26), and McNeil (23) – generated more goalscoring chances from open action than the Ivory Coast international's 22.

The 24-year-old has been a fixture for Lyon since signing from Metz in 2015, scoring 51 goals in all, one of which came in an astonishing 3-1 triumph against Manchester City in the 2019-20

Champions League

quarter-final little over a year ago.

"I am excited to be joining Burnley in the

Premier League

and to play with and against many of the greatest players in the world," Cornet, who will wear the number 20, told Burnley's official website.

"I have developed the greatest respect for Burnley and what the club has done. I welcome the challenge of hard work and am fully committed to doing what I can to contribute. I look forward to what we can achieve."

Cornet is Burnley's fourth professional signing of the summer window, after the arrivals of Nathan Collins and Wayne Hennessey, as well as the return of Aaron Lennon last week.
