Khedira: I knew where the spaces were

The German midfielder provided an assist in his team’s draw against Stuttgart.

Hertha BSC

managed to collect one point from their Saturday match against

Stuttgart

.

Sasa Kalajdzic

opened the scoring for Stuttgart just before half-time, but Hertha’s highly-rated youngster

Luca Netz

scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute. By providing the assist for Netz’s goal,

Sami Khedira

completed his first impactful action since his return to the Bundesliga. Many of the club’s fans have criticized the decision to sign the ex-Germany international as the team have several other players in the same position. However, an impressive performance against Stuttgart might turn things around for the 33-year-old. In a post-match interview, Khedira has spoken about his performance.

"Football is a game of distribution and mapping,"

Khedira told a press conference,

"I knew where the spaces were. Understanding a game, how the opponent is playing. That's one of my strengths."

He added:

"In American football, everyone has their route. If someone doesn't run their route, the whole game gets screwed,"

Khedira mused,

"It's a bit like that in [association] football too. If you don't stand where you need to stand, it gets difficult. We held our positions better today."
