Thomas Tuchel appointed Chelsea manager

Chelsea have confirmed the former PSG manager Thomas Tuchel replaces the ex-Blues midfielder.

Former

Borussia Dortmund

and

PSG

manager

Thomas Tuchel

was appointed as

Chelsea

’s new head coach a day after the sacking of

Frank Lampard

.

The 47-year-old will be charged with the task of reviving the hopes of a side sat in ninth in the Premier League table, with Champions League qualification the likely target for the rest of the season.

Thomas Tuchel has been appointed head coach of Chelsea on an 18-month contract with the option of an extension.

The German manager will be in the dugout for Wednesday's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers and is taking his first training session with his new players ahead of the game.

Tuchel can apply different systems but the most likely system will be a 4-3-3 in which Jorginho - who Tuchel wanted to sign for PSG - plays at the base of midfield, with Mason Mount in the hybrid role and Mateo Kovacic or N’Golo Kante box-to-box.

Given the importance of pressing from the front, of dropping into the half-spaces, and of playing on the half-turn to advance with quick, vertical football, it seems likely a narrow front three will see Kai Havertz supported by Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic.
