Off the Pitch: Euro 2020 – Day 8

The Euros finally came to rest as we had somewhat of a calmer day yesterday. Of course it was still full of thrilling and exciting moments on the fields, but compared to all the drama we have lived through so far in the tournament, we had a simpler day. From Christian Eriksen finally being discharged from hospital, to Gareth Southgate dropping out of favor as England’s manager due to his side’s poor run of form in the competition, and to Gary Lineker being left red-faced by Swedish footballer Alexander Isak, here is everything that happened yesterday.

Finally we have some good news come out of Euro 2020.

was finally discharged from hospital yesterday after doctors successfully fitted him with a hear-starter. The 29-year-old suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during Denmark’s clash against Finland, after which we all were witnesses to horrible scenes of the medical team trying to revive the midfielder. Thankfully, Eriksen has partially recovered from his heart attack, which is why he was able to visit his Denmark teammates before returning to his wife and children after being discharged from hospital.

as England fans were left frustrated with how their national team has been playing. Gareth Southgate’s men were so disjointed in their draw against Scotland that they were booed off the pitch by England fans.

It caused a massive outrage on social media and amongst pundits such as Graeme Souness and Gary Neville, who were utterly disappointed by the display put on by the Three Lions. While Souness claimed that “it ain’t coming home”, Neville blasted his nation’s display as a “massive disappointment”. Surely the outrage will continue until Southgate finds a way to turn things around.

Southgate was already under scrutiny for calling up too many defenders and right-backs, which has led to him not making up his mind on whom to deploy at these positions. Meanwhile

was all alone at the front against Scotland, where he was dealt with quite easily as he showed none of his class that we are used to seeing at Tottenham.

Sir Alex Ferguson who?

Imagine being one of the most influential football managers in history and having already earned the title of “sir” through being awarded a knighthood by her majesty the Queen of England, but you are denied VIP parking at Wembley. That is what happened to Sir Alex Ferguson, who was denied VIP parking for some reason as he looked disgruntled while his chauffeur talked to the steward, who directed them away in the end.

A big shout out to the steward who simply didn’t care who was in front of him and followed protocols even for the greatest manager in

history. The now 79-year-old spent more than 27 years in charge of Manchester United, turning them into one of the most decorated clubs in the world. Ferguson won a record 13 Premier League titles, 2 Champions League trophies, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, the Intercontinental Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, 2 UEFA Supercups and 10 Community Shields throughout his career at Manchester United.

Gary Lineker was left red-faced after Alexander Isak admitted he doesn’t know who the Englishman is. Lineker had previously praised the Sweden international for his performances, which led to him being his nation’s hero as a top performer. But while the now 60-year-old pundit knew all about the 21-year-old forward, he seemed to have no clue about who Lineker was when asked about his opinion regarding the Englishman’s comments.

When asked about Lineker’s praises, Isak replied “I’m not aware of him… an old player in the studio?” while the young footballer’s reply did leave Lineker red-faced a bit, it might not bother him as much since he is regarded by many to be one of the greatest English strikers in history, having played for the likes of Everton, Leicester City,
