His father Stipe Modric worked as an aeromechanic and joined the Croatian Army when the family were forced to flee the area, whilst his mother Rodojka worked as a textile worker.
In 1991, when Modric was just six-years-old, the village in which he was born was captured by local Croatian Serb rebels and his grandfather was murdered by them in cold blood when attending to the cattle.
It was a horrific experience for a child to be subjected to and the Modric family had to consequently flee the area and stay as refugees in a large hotel in Zadar.
Years later Luka described the war situation in his childhood in an interview, saying:
"I had a nice childhood, even though I grew up in hotels. When the war started, we became refugees, and it was a really tough time. I was six years old. These were really hard times. I remember them vividly, but it's not something you want to remember or think about."
"My father fought for me to play football. He never had to make me shin pads, but it was a lot of money to send to me to a soccer school. And to provide boots and things."
Despite the difficult circumstances, Luka began playing football at an early age, mostly at the hotel parking lot. In 1992, he simultaneously entered the primary school and a sporting academy, the latter paid for with the little money the family had, sometimes helped by Modrić's uncle.
