Steven Gerrard was born at the end of May 1980 at Whiston Hospital in Knowsley in the Metropolitan County of Merseyside, around ten kilometers east of Liverpool city center. As the second-born after his brother Paul, he grew up in a well-cared-for, modest and, above all, football-savvy environment. His father inspired his son in

He behaved mostly shy in the classrooms, performances were average and the focus was on the playing fields next to the buildings of St. Michael's School, which he initially attended. In choosing the secondary Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School, in addition to religious reasons, it was important that it supported Gerrard's football talents. Another important advantage was that he was then eligible to play for Liverpool youth teams, which were more frequently evaluated by scouts.

However, Gerrard's connection to Liverpool FC was already well established by then. From the age of eight, he was part of the Reds' youth set-up, which was led by former player Steve Heighway. The connection was initiated by one of Heighway's associates, who was good friends with the coach of the Whiston Juniors youth team, for whom Gerrard played (and continued to play) at the time. Early teammates included later internationals such as Jason Koumas and Michael Owen.

It was in his partnership with Owen, in particular, that the high quality of the youngster was already evident in Liverpool FC's under-12 side. Further confirmation seemed to follow when, alongside Owen as well as Stephen Wright and Neil Murphy, Gerrard received an invitation to audition for a two-year scholarship at the then national soccer academy in Lilleshall at the age of 14. 

Despite good impressions, however, the representatives there turned him down, in contrast to Owen - the great disappointment about this continued to affect Gerrard for a long time, especially since the reasons seemed to lie primarily in the fact that he was quite small for his age at that time. On the other hand, he was held in higher esteem by renowned clubs and, in addition to concrete offers from Manchester City, Everton FC and Tottenham Hotspur,

also showed interest in signing him.

However, it did not lead to a transfer and Gerrard received a two-year training contract after the end of the U-16 season. Another "reward" for him was nomination to the squad for the FA Youth Cup final in May 1996, where he witnessed the 4-1 victory over West Ham United (with Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand) from the bench.

The YTS program initially involved training sessions at Liverpool University, and only later did the talented players train side by side with first-team players at the performance center in Melwood. Jamie Redknapp developed into a special reference person for Gerrard there, mainly because he played roughly the same position. However, a smooth progression to the professional squad did not take place.

This was primarily due to the fact that Gerrard often had to deal with injuries during his growth period. The club initially decided not to offer him a professional contract, but after intensive talks with Gerrard's father, the parties agreed on a three-year contract worth £700 a week in the first year, then £800 and finally £900. His progress now followed at shorter and shorter intervals, and good performances at the start of the 1998/99 season in the club's U-19 squad meant that he quickly moved closer to the professional team. 

A big part in this was played by the new French coach Gérard Houllier, who had joined Liverpool FC in the summer of 1998 and coached the team together with Roy Evans until early November. Houllier promoted Gerrard to the first-team squad and instructed the rookie to change his diet and increase strength exercises to prepare for professional soccer.

Since he was eight years old, Gerrard went through Liverpool's youth program as a right back, with players such as Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher. He then made his debut in the 1998/1999 season against

. In the year 2000/2001, there was a problem in the midfield which caused Gerrard to play a few games there. It worked out so well that he remained a midfielder for the rest of his career.

In the 2002-03 season, he played in the final Premier League match against

Despite Owen leaving the club, Gerrard stayed at Liverpool and secured the Champions League the following season as captain, after winning the final against AC Milan in a penalty shootout.

In the middle of the 2003-04 season, he took over the captaincy from Sami Hyypia, and his potential came to life. They were still in the hunt for a Champions League place that season, however, a great performance at the end of the season helped them to finish fourth before the final day of the season.

Liverpool FC announced in the summer of 2005 that Gerrard had submitted a transfer request to leave. He withdrew that request a day later. Instead, Gerrard signed a new contract with Liverpool on 7 June 2005. Before that, he scored his hundredth goal against PSV on 1 October 2008 in the group stage of the Champions League 2008-2009. Gerrard scored for Liverpool in the 90th minute of the final for the FA Cup 2005-2006 against West Ham United. Gerrard won the English player of the year 2012 award. In the 2013/2014 season, Liverpool was in first place for a long time but eventually finished second behind Manchester City.

Gerrard played his 500th Premier League game on Saturday, April 25, 2015. He was the twelfth player ever to reach this number and Liverpool's second, after Jamie Carragher. On May 24, 2015, Gerrard played his last game in the Liverpool team. On that day, Liverpool played out at Stoke City. Gerrard managed to score himself, but Liverpool lost the game 6-1. Gerrard never lost a game with five goals difference before.

After his contract with Liverpool expired, Gerrard moved to the U.S.

team LA Galaxy on July 1, 2015. He played his first competitive match for the Galaxy on July 18, 2015 against San José Earthquakes, which was won 5-2. Gerrard scored the equalizer to tie the game at 2-2, and he also set up two other goals. Throughout the 2015 season, Gerrard made 13 appearances in the regular season scoring one goal, and one appearance in the playoffs, where they were defeated by the Seattle Sounders in the first round.

After the season ended, Gerrard returned to Liverpool FC at the end of November 2015 and took part in training under Jürgen Klopp, but returned to the United States. In January 2017, Gerrard joined Liverpool FC as youth coach. He took over as head coach of the U18s for the 2017/18 season. In the summer of 2018, Gerrard became head coach of Scottish Premiership club

A central midfielder, he was able to play as an outside player and as a trequartista, qualities that led him to be defined as one of the most complete players in his generation. Legal Issues

On October 1, 2007, Gerrard was involved in a low-speed accident in Southport when the car he was driving hit a 10-year-old cyclist, who inadvertently swerved on the road and crossed Gerrard's path. Later, Gerrard visited the boy at the hospital and handed him a pair of shoes signed by Wayne Rooney, the boy's favorite player, after which Gerrard stayed on to sign autographs for other young patients.

On December 29, 2008, Gerrard was arrested along with two others outside the Lounge Inn in Southport, charged with assault causing personal injury and brawling, following an incident that left the bar's disc jockey with a broken tooth and cuts on his forehead. All three men were released on bail but were scheduled to appear in North Sefton Magistrate's Court on January 23, 2009, where they all pleaded not guilty. The court adjourned until March 20 when the assault charge was dropped, but Gerrard was required to attend the Liverpool Crown Court to stand trial for brawling. On April 3, 2009, Gerrard pleaded not guilty.

The trial began in Liverpool Crown Court. The co-defendants pleaded guilty before the trial, but Gerrard continued to claim he was innocent. Gerrard admitted that he had hit Marcus McGee, but claimed that he was in self-defence. On July 24, 2009, Gerrard was found not guilty by the jury. After the verdict, Gerrard said he looks forward to playing soccer again and moving on.
