Chelsea offers Chalobah a new contract as a move for Kounde dissolves
Against all expectations when the 22-year-old was involved in Chelsea’s pre-season just to enlarge squad number, Chalobah has been a revelation for Chelsea.
The centre-back first made an outstanding performance against Villarreal in Chelsea’s European Super Cup triumph, then continued the show-off
with a Stunning goal in Chelsea’s opening game against Crystal Palace, his Premier League debut.
According to
Goal, The centre-back was fast to become a favorite for Thomas Tuchel as the German coach personally informed the 22-year-old that he will be kept in and around the squad for the remainder of the season as he won’t be loaned out.
Tuchel has also ordered that contract talks be opened with the youngster - whose current deal has just two years left to run.
Chalobah’s new contract means the Blues' pursuit of Kounde is not clear. Chelsea had been hoping to add a new centre-back this summer, Frenchman Kurt Zouma continues to be heavily linked with an exit, with West Ham and Tottenham both named as suitors.
Without Zouma’s departure, it’s unlikely that Chelsea makes a move for Kounde. In addition to Chalobah, Chelsea currently has six natural centre-backs on the books, Zouma, Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Ethan Ampadu, and right-back Cesar Azpilicueta also sees regular minutes in that position.
Earlier last week,
Sevilla sporting director Monchi revealedthat they have yet to receive an offer for Jules Kounde, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea.
