are already on their way to the next round with two decisive wins, there is much left to be decided on matchday 3rd of the tournament.

The next round of the group stages starts off with two games kicking off at simultaneously at 18:00 CET, when Italy face Wales and Switzerland take on Turkey. While Italy only battles for a position at the top of the group, all the other nations fight for a spot in the next round of the tournament.

Are Turkey going to bounce back from their terrible run of form in Euro 2020? Will Switzerland prove too strong for Turkey, scoring as many goals as they can and be lucky enough to see Wales lose heavily against Italy so that they can go through to the next round instead? Let’s first take a look at each nation’s performances so far.

Switzerland

have been the better of the two sides as they have managed to clinch a draw and a single point in the group stages so far. They started off their campaign with a draw against

, even though they deserved a win in their first match. Many Swiss fans were hopeful to see a much better performance from their national team in the second match, but they were battered 3-0 by a strong Italy, who gave them no chance to recover.

Switzerland are more than capable of going through to the knockout stages. But it is only a game of chance from now on as they are not in a hopeful position in their group.

Turkey

were one of the most promising national teams coming into the Euro 2020 group stages, with several key victories prior to the start of the tournament. But while many had high hopes for Turkey and thought they might go a long distance in the competition, Turkey have disappointed not only themselves and their compatriots, but also every neutral viewer and all the pundits who had previously voted for Turkey to succeed.

Thankfully for Turkey fans, everything is far from over as they still have the slightest chance of progressing through to the next round with several miracles happening in the third matchday of the group stages. At least they have the chance for redemption as they look set to take on Switzerland.

Form analysis

Switzerland have not been much of an accurate and efficient side throughout the tournament so far. They had a total of 18 attempts during their match against Wales, but only 4 of those attempts were on target as they wasted so many chances throughout the 90 minutes. With more than 500 passes, Switzerland had 65% of the ball on the pitch, but were unable to deliver a lethal final blow to the opposition, which led to them losing two crucial points in the first game.

Come their second game and they were once again just as inaccurate and inefficient as before, with the added disadvantage of being under constant pressure from the Italians. Switzerland had 6 shots during their game against

, but only one shot was on target, which was again a disappointingly low number for such a formidable side. They will surely work on their accuracy with the following possible line up.

On the other side of the pitch, we have Turkey, who just couldn’t have had a worse start to such a tournament so far. With two unbelievably easy defeats against Italy and Wales, Turkey will surely have to work on their defense if they want to have any chance against Switzerland.

They obviously had a much better performance against Wales and they came so close to scoring a goal or two throughout the match. But close doesn’t count in a game of football, and one must be decisive and effective if they want to win a game of football. That is why they lost the game to Wales, despite having 64% possession of the ball and making 18 attempts during the match.

They had a pretty decent accuracy with 6 attempts on target during the game. But none of their efforts proved enough, which means that they can at least improve on their defensive game to better hold off the opposition today.

The two national teams have locked horns a total of 15 times throughout the years, with most of them being international friendlies. But they have met each other in both Euros and World Cup Qualifiers as well. History is on Turkey’s side as they have won eight of their games against Switzerland, drawing three and only losing four times. Their last match dates back to Euro 2008, when Turkey won 2-1.

Prediction

Just as the odds for the match and Turkey’s prior performances show, they might have a tough time coping with Switzerland’s constant pressure. Perhaps Switzerland have a better chance of winning this one.

Switzerland v Turkey referees

Referee Slavko Vincic from Slovenia will be in charge of the clash between Switzerland and Turkey, with compatriots Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic acting as his assistant referees. The game will have Bastian Dankert as the main VAR and Christian Dingert, Christian Gittelmann and Marco Fritz as assistant VAR officials. Andreas Ekberg from Sweden will be the fourth official as the two nations battle it out at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
