Trezeguet started his professional career at Platense in Argentina's Primera División, where he made his debut as a 16-year-old in a 1–1 draw against

Gimnasia y Esgrima

de La Plata on June 12, 1994. He moved to his native country to play for AS Monaco after just five games with the team.

He was on the verge of joining Paris Saint-Germain in 1995, but the deal fell through after the two clubs couldn't agree on a price. He decided to join Monaco shortly after that. Trezeguet impressed Monaco coach Jean Tigana during his trial, scoring five goals and signing a contract worth 15,000 francs per month.

Trezeguet spent two seasons with

Monaco B

after making just nine appearances for the first team during his first two seasons with the club. In a quarter-final match against Manchester United in 1998, Trezeguet scored the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history in terms of velocity.

The goal-scoring shot was clocked at 97.6 miles per hour (157.3 kilometers per hour). He won Ligue 1 twice with Monaco and was voted Young Player of the Year in 1998. He scored 60 goals in 113 appearances for the French team, and it was here that he established himself as a dangerous goalscorer.

Trezeguet scored 14 goals in

Serie A

during his first season with Juventus under Carlo Ancelotti, despite being used primarily as a backup striker behind Filippo Inzaghi, who started alongside Alessandro Del Piero.

Juventus finished second behind

Roma

in the 2000–01 Serie A season, missing out on the championship. He scored 24 league goals in 34 league matches in his second season at the club, under manager Marcello Lippi, to finish as the Serie A top goalscorer, along with Dario Hübner of Piacenza, as Juventus won the 2001–02 Serie A trophy.

He was named Serie A Footballer of the Year and Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year in the same season, as well as reaching the 2001–02 Coppa Italia final. He also scored eight goals in ten UEFA Champions League appearances, despite the fact that his team was eliminated in the competition's second round. Trezeguet has never been this close to winning the Champions League.

Trezeguet assisted the team in winning a second consecutive Supercoppa Italiana trophy, scoring a goal in the final, as well as reaching another Coppa Italia final, though their European and domestic league campaigns were less fruitful, despite his 16 goals in Serie A that season, as the club finished third in the league. Trezeguet was included in Pelé's FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living footballers, in 2004.

Trezeguet won the Serie A titles in 2004–05 and 2005–06 with Juventus, scoring 23 league goals in the 2005–06 season. However, Juventus were implicated in the 2006 Italian football scandal, along with Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Reggina, and was accused of match-fixing.

Despite the fact that the players were not involved in the scandal, Juventus was stripped of its 2004–05 and 2005–06 titles, relegated to Serie B and forced to start the 2006–07 season with a 30-point deficit, which was later reduced to nine points on appeal.

Following the club's forced relegation to Serie B, some key players left, including Fabio Cannavaro to Real Madrid, Gianluca Zambrotta to FC Barcelona, Adrian Mutu to Fiorentina, and Zlatan Ibrahimovi to Internazionale. Lilian Thuram and Patrick Vieira, Trezeguet's compatriots, have left Juventus for

Barcelona

and Inter, respectively.

Boss Fabio Capello left for Real Madrid, and Didier Deschamps, a former Juventus legend and Trezeguet's former France teammate and captain, was named the club's new manager. Trezeguet was strongly linked with a move away from Juventus as one of the club's stars players, but he eventually remained with the Bianconeri to help the club return to Italy's top flight.

Trezeguet scored his 168th goal for Juventus in a 4–1 loss to Bayern Munich in the 2009–10 UEFA Champions League, surpassing Omar Svori's record of 167 goals and becoming the club's all-time foreign goalscorer. Trezeguet placed fourth among Juventus' all-time leading goal scorers with 171 goals at the end of the 2009–10 season. Juventus released him from the final 12 months of his contract in August 2010.

Trezeguet signed a two-year contract with Hércules CF, a newly promoted La Liga team based in his then-hometown, wife's on August 28, 2010. Trezeguet appeared in 31 league games and scored 12 times, making him the club's leading scorer.

Trezeguet signed a one-year contract with UAE Pro League side Baniyas SC on August 30, 2011. Due to an injury that held him out for the majority of the season, his contract was mutually terminated on November 21, 2011. Trezeguet only played in Baniyas' first league match and one match in the Etisalat Emirates Cup.

Trezeguet signed a three-year contract with River Plate in Argentina on December 19, 2011, shortly after the club was relegated to the Argentine second division for the first time in its history.

Trezeguet, a River fan since childhood and a native of Buenos Aires, described it as his dream transfer, saying, "Being here is a special feeling, inspired by all that River represents." Trezeguet scored his first goal for River Plate in a friendly match against Racing Club de Avellaneda on January 19, 2012.

Despite fan protests, despite being a core member of the River Plate squad that returned to Argentina's Primera División, head coach and manager Ramón Daz announced in June that he will no longer be a part of the team's squad.

David was able to play for both France and Argentina as a French–Argentinian. Trezeguet made his international debut in the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship with the French youth team, alongside Thierry Henry, Willy Sagnol, and William Gallas.

Aimé Jacquet gave younger players like David Trezeguet, Henry, and Patrick Vieira the chance to show off their potential in the build-up to the 1998 World Cup in France, and all three were ultimately picked for the tournament ahead of more seasoned French players like David Ginola.

Trezeguet threatened to leave France on October 19, 2007, after coach Raymond Domenech passed him up for two Euro 2008 qualifying matches. Trezeguet was picked for a friendly against England on March 26, 2008, to replace the injured Karim Benzema. This will be Trezeguet's last appearance for France, as he was not selected for the Euro 2008 squad.

He announced his retirement from international football on July 9, 2008, with 34 goals from 71 caps, placing him third among France's all-time highest scorers. He cited "the awful Euro 2008 and the reappointment of the coach" being the main reasons for this decision, and also added "I see football differently from how they see it in France. Euro 2008 was very negative, but what annoys me more is that Domenech is staying."
