On 22 January 2012, Bernat appeared on his second league appearance in a 1-1 draw, substituting Jonas in the 57th minute.

One important fact about Juan Bernat is regarding his first official goal for Valencia which was on 28 November 2012, in that season’s Copa del Rey. The game was a 3-1 home defeat with Llagostera.

The young and pacey winger who was mainly positioned as a left-back has been compared to

Jordi Alba

whom he shares many similarities in the sense of style and skill. Bernat stated how much of an honor it is for him to be compared with Alba, “It’s an honor as well as a huge compliment for me.

He has achieved and done some great things for Barcelona and Spain,” the 20-year-old footballer said back in 2013.

“A lot of people say we are similar players, especially because just like him I changed position from winger to full-back. Here's hoping I can achieve even half the success he has to date. He is the undisputed left-back with Spain with whom he won UEFA EURO 2012.

I met him here at Valencia and get on really well with him. I regularly talk to him and he helps me a lot with his advice. He's certainly someone I look up to.”

Bundesliga

club, Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich

On 7 July 2014, Bernat signed a five-year deal with Bayern Munich. Bernat explained in an interview how he came to join Bayern Munich:

“It was the end of the season and my contract was coming to an end. I got offers from several teams including several teams in Spain, but I was with Valencia and I didn't want to leave for another Spanish club. Then, I got an opportunity from this amazing team with Pep Guardiola, who called me.

And, being realistic, I couldn't say no to a great club like this one. I knew it would be difficult. It was a very strong team, one of the best in the world, so the competition is really fierce. It's tricky. In fairness, the coach has shown a lot of trust in me, and I think I've repaid him in every game I've played.”

On 13 August, he made his debut for the club in a 0-2 defeat to

Borussia Dortmund

in the DFL-Supercup. Bernat played his first Bundesliga match nine days later, a 2-1 home win over

VfL Wolfsburg

. On 30 January 2015, Bernat scored his first goal for the club in a 1-4 loss against Wolfsburg.

While missing Spain was a big deal for Bernat, he didn’t lose the opportunity to shine in Germany and he even tried learning the language. However, it was hard for him to work in another country: “It was difficult at first because it's all-new. It's a new city, a new language, and then there's the weather. That's something I really miss.”

After an entire interview in German, Bernat expressed his feeling about speaking in German: “I was really nervous, as I always am when I speak German.

I have to be more relaxed. I think I’m getting to grips with the language now. I try to communicate more and more in German in everyday situations. Only when I get stuck do I switch to English. It’s not so easy but I’m getting there, bit by bit.”

Michel Munger, editor-in-chief of FC Bayern Central said about Bernat, “Juan Bernat is a highly specialized player, whose role is to act as a wing-back on the left flank.

He goes back and forth with the flow of the play, handling both attacking when in the possession and providing defensive coverage without the ball. His best skills are covering the ground with pace, short passing, taking the game to the opponent, and trying to choke its attacks before they develop.

Granted, Bernat had a slow start in the first few weeks of the season. Nevertheless, his style is increasingly blending with the strengths of the team. On a few occasions, he was among the best players on the pitch, alongside Xabi Alonso. That may only be the beginning since there is much promise in the young wing-back.”

Uli Hoeness, Bayern’s board member, in response to why they let go of Bernat said “Bayern's wellbeing doesn't depend on Bernat.” After a particularly bad performance in a 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League Hoeness said, “He [Bernat] was solely responsible for us almost being eliminated.

That day, we decided we would sell him because he almost cost us all the success in the Champions League.” Only a few weeks later Bernat was sold to French side PSG in a €15 million deal.

Juan Bernat’s stats of the time shows he had made a total of 76 league appearances for the German club in his 4 seasons with them.  The total number of appearances that he made including continental and cups are 113 with 5 goals scored and 10 assists.
