Barcelona officially signs Ronaldinho's son

Barcelona has officially signed Ronaldinho's son, Joao Mendes after he turned 18 last month.

Barcelona

announced on Thursday that Joao Mendes will join the club’s academy.

The teenager had been playing for Cruzeiro since he was 14 but left the Brazilian side at the end of last year. He was training with Barca's Juvenil A since January, and now they have decided to sign him officially.

Mendes will play with Barcelona's under-19 team. Reports suggest that Barcelona has signed him until the summer 2024, and then they will decide whether to offer him a long-term contract or not.

"The pressure that the boy has is very great, because Ronaldinho was one of the best in history. The son has pressure, but it is the job of our coaches to develop his skills,"

the Barca president Joan Laporta said earlier in February at a Mundo Deportivo gala.

Ronaldinho spent five years as a player with Barcelona from 2003-08 and won two

La Liga

titles and one

Champions League

. The Brazilian forward also won the Ballon d'Or award.

When his son joined Barcelona on a trial, Ronaldinho said:

”Barcelona is part of my life. Wherever I go I take Barcelona with me. With the arrival of my son at Barcelona I will be more present than ever.”

Ronaldinho who scored 94 goals in 207 appearances for Barcelona, currently is an ambassador for the Spanish club.
