Frenkie de Jong: I never wanted to leave Barcelona

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong insists he never wanted to leave his club during the summer despite strong links with Manchester United.

Barcelona

reportedly due to their financial situations and his high salary wanted to sell De Jong this summer and even reached an agreement with Manchester United on an €85m fee.

The Spanish press during summer reported that Barcelona have to sell De Jong and if he wants to stay at the club should reduce his salary but at the end, De Jong stayed at the Catalan club and so far has refused to reduce his salary.

“I knew what I wanted, staying at Barcelona,”

he told NOS.

“I can't quite go into details. The club sometimes have its own ideas about things and so do I. Sometimes that collides, but overall it went fine. I always had it clear what I wanted. There was a lot of noise and a lot happened. It has of course been different from other transfer windows for me.

“Manchester United and Chelsea? In May I had already decided that I would continue at Barça. I never changed my mind.”

The 25-year-old De Jong who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 has scored one goal in 8 matches this season.
