Roy Keane baffled by Rangnick's call to sideline Ronaldo vs Man City

Cristiano Ronaldo's absence against Manchester City was attributed to injury by Ralf Rangnick, but Roy Keane disputed the reasoning.

Cristiano Ronaldo

was left out of

Manchester United'

s roster for Sunday's derby match against

Manchester City

, and Roy Keane is puzzled by the german's decision.

Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in all tournaments for Man Utd this season, but he was absent from the match against

Premier League

toppers City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Portugal international's exclusion for the match was linked to a hip flexor ailment that kept him out of training camp on Friday, according to Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick may have left out the five-time Ballon d'Or winner for such a vital match for other reasons, according to former United player Keane.

"There seems to be more to the Ronaldo story when a manager comes out and talks about a hip flexor... I don't get it," Keane told Sky Sports ahead of the match.

"We talk about Ronaldo being a machine and very rarely getting injured but every now and again he comes out with that... a hip flexor? It doesn't add up to me.

"It's a surprise to hear Ronaldo has a hip injury but United have pace, quality. They still have important players and they still have to come out and play with pride."

Before the game against the Cityzens, Ronaldo has appeared in 30 of United's 37 games this season, trailing just Jadon Sancho (31), David de Gea (35) and Bruno Fernandes (32). (36).

Before Sunday, the Red Devils had won 11 of the 20 Premier League matches in which Ronaldo had played, compared to two victories in the seven games in which he had not participated.

After contracting the coronavirus, Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane missed the City match, while Edinson Cavani was unable to recuperate in time.
