Players That Could Move In January To Increase Their Euro Chances

Thu 26 November 2020 | 11:50

The European Championships will take place in the summer of 2021 after being pushed back a year due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. The rescheduled tournament will already be on the minds of players around Europe, and there will be some players that are playing for some of the biggest teams that may feel that they will need to move club in the January transfer window.

All of the ones on this list are looking to ensure that they have the best possible chance of securing a starting place in their international team for the Summer tournament. But, which players could be on the move in the upcoming January transfer window?

Oliver Giroud

One player that has reportedly looked for assurances about his future has been Oliver Giroud. The Frenchman is one of the leading scorers for his country but has found game time this season hard to come by due to Frank Lampard bringing in Timo Werner in the summer.

Giroud is now down to third choice in the pecking order, as Lampard often prefers Tammy Abraham over the Frenchman.

France boss Didier Deschamps has already reportedly told Giroud that he will need to play more regularly if he is to be his number one striker in the Euros next year.

That could mean that the Frenchman could look for a move away from Stamford Bridge in the winter window, and there will be a number of teams keeping track on the Frenchman.

He has scored 30 goals in 96 games for the Blues, and Lampard has reiterated that he doesn’t want to lose the striker.

Dele Ali

Dele Ali’s career has come to a screeching halt this season, and it appears that there is no place in the Tottenham Hotspur team for the Englishman. Ali was considered to be one of the most exciting players that England have developed for many years, and played the best football of his career under Maurico Pochettino.

Despite that, his development has been hindered since the arrival of Jose Mourinho, and rumours were ripe over the summer that the manager could be willing to let the attacking midfielder go.

There doesn’t look to be a way back for Ali at present, as Mourinho has not opted to play an attacking midfielder throughout the season. Mourinho doesn’t appear to have trust in Ali to complete the tasks that he expects from his team.

There will still be huge interest in Ali if he does become available, as Mourinho admitted during the

All Or Nothing documentary

that Sir Alex Ferguson always believed that Mourinho should have signed Ali during his time with Manchester United. He has recently lost his place in the England squad, but a move away could help his chances.

Jesse Lingard

Another Englishman that could be looking for a new club in the January transfer window to improve their chances of making the England squad is Jesse Lingard. He has found first-team chances difficult to come by since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford, and the signing of Donny van de Beek almost certainly signalled the end of his United career.

However, he will likely get a lot of attention from clubs around the Premier League, as he has shown throughout his career that he is a big game player. He has scored in FA Cup and League Cup finals for United but has made just 42 appearances in all competitions across the past two seasons.

Lingard is yet to feature for United in the Premier League this season, and a loan move could be the best short-term option for both parties. Still, even if he moves to another team, it will be hard for him to sneak into Southgate’s choice for Euro 2021.

All in all, predicting the upcoming rosters for the Euros would be like trying to predict the odds for the

Kentucky Derby. In the famous horse race, the odds change weekly due to injuries and form of the competitors and in the Euros a single injury might put someone unexpected in the spotlight.
