Marco Silva, born 12 July 1977 in Lisbon, Portugal, is a retired Portuguese footballer and current manager of Fulham FC in the Championship. He was trained in the youth ranks of Os

, for whom he made his professional debut in 1996. He moved to Atlético CP in 1997 and between 1998 and 2001 he played for Clube Desportivo

He was loaned for one year in 1999 to SC Campomaiorense, which was then in the Portuguese First Division. He played for second and third division clubs between 2000 and 2005. In 2011, he retired from playing, with his last club being for Grupo Desportivo Estoril Praia.

His coaching debut came in 2011 when he was in charge of Estoril, the club where he had retired. He left that team in 2014 to join Sporting Lisbon, which he coached in the 2014-15 season. He finished third in the Portuguese league with Sporting CP, but his contract was not renewed, and he joined Olympiacos Football Club for the 2015-2016 season, winning the Greek league with 28 wins, one draw and one defeat.

Silva then signed for Premier League side Hull City in January 2017, however, he was unsuccessful in saving them from relegation as they finished in 18th place and he decided not to continue at the club.

Nevertheless, he stayed on in the UK to coach Watford. While the English side had started the season in the top positions in the Premier League, Silva eventually was sacked on 21 January 2018, after only one win in the last 11 games, although the Hornets were placed 10th in the standings.

Marco Silva Early Life

Marco Silva was brought up in the Portuguese capital Lisbon and played for Belenenses Lisbon as a youth player. His professional debut was in the 1996/97 season, however, he only made one appearance. In the end, Belenenses finished in 13th place that season. Afterwards, he transferred to Atlético CP, another Lisbon-based club, playing in the third division of Portuguese football.

This was followed by other Portuguese third and second division clubs later in his career. Marco Silva only played one more time in the Primeira Liga, when he went out on loan to Campomaiorense in 1999/2000. The last years of Silva's career were spent with Estoril Praia. During his first season he promoted the club to the first division, finishing as the champion of the second division with a record of 16 wins, 9 draws and 5 defeats. After the second season, he finished 5th in the league, thereby qualifying for the Europa League.

Olympiacos Piraeus

in July 2015. His first match in the Greek Super League was the convincing 3-0 home win against Panionios Athens. It was a memorable start to the season in the league, as Marco Silva and Olympiacos was able to win all of the first 17 league matches and only was stopped by AO Platanias on 18 January 2016 with a 1-1 away draw.

Hull City

Following a six-month break, Silva went on to sign with English Premier League side

in January 2017. At first, he was expected to stay until the end of the season in an attempt to save the team from relegation to the EFL Championship.

There was an upturn in sporting fortunes under Silva. For example, the Tigers made it to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, where they were only defeated in the second leg by English record champions Manchester United. In the league, they also won several matches immediately after Silva's signing. However, the team was relegated at the end of the season and Silva's contract was not renewed.

The club's board of directors confirmed that his contract will not be renewed on 25 May 2017. In a press release on the website, the board said "The club can now announce that Marco Silva has chosen to step down from his position as head coach. The board also added "While we are disappointed with Marco's departure, we would again like to put on record our appreciation for his efforts and that of his coaching staff. Although he was only in charge for a short period of time, the 39-year-old coach has developed into a firm fan favourite and will be forever remembered for his endeavours to maintain our Premier League status."

On his Facebook page, the coach left a message, "It has been an exciting experience as our staff, players and fans have joined together in a brave effort to stay in the Premier League, and all of us believe that if we had started our journey earlier this season we could have achieved what the fans truly deserve, to see Hull City retain their Premier League status." He ended the message with "I will continue to be a supporter of the club."

Watford
