Daniele De Rossi Early Life

De Rossi started playing very early in the youth academy of Ostiamare. Initially, he played as a full-back, but later he became a striker. When he was 9 years old he received his first call from other clubs, but he rejected it to stay with his Ostiamare teammates.

However, at the age of just 16-17, he finally decided to join the Giallorossi, whose father Alberto was the coach of the Primavera team. De Rossi immediately made a name for himself and became an important part of the Roma youth team.

Thanks in part to his former coach Mauro Bencivenga, De Rossi switched from the role of striker to the midfielder in Roma's youth team, a position that would continue in future seasons.

Daniele De Rossi Profile

In early 2001, De Rossi received his first call-up to the first team - wearing the number 26 shirt - although he never played. Manager Fabio Capello gave him his professional debut on 30 October 2001, when he was 18 years old, substituting Tomić in the second half of the Champions League match Roma-

Anderlecht

(1-1). During his debut season, he also played in 3 matches in the Coppa Italia, a competition in which Roma failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

The next season, on 25 January 2003, he played his first Serie A match at the age of 19 in Como and

Roma

match (2-0). He came into the starting line-up for the first time on 10 May and scored his first goal in Serie A in the home match against Torino (3-1).

De Rossi also scored his second goal of the season on 24 May in the last league game of the season, which was lost 1-2 to

Atalanta

at the Stadio Olimpico. The team finished the season in seventh place and lost the Coppa Italia final to AC Milan. He went on to finish the season with 4 appearances and 2 goals in the league.

In 2003/04 he played 17 times in the league and made 4 appearances in the Coppa Italia, helping Roma to second place in the league. He played 6 times in the UEFA Cup and scored his first goal in the European Cup on 24 September 2003, in the 4-0 first-leg win over the Vardar. In that competition, Roma was then knocked out by Villarreal in the round of 16.

Early successes

In 2004-05, when he was 21 years old, he became a key player in the team. He chose to wear the number 4 shirt, which had been vacated by Cristian Chivu, who picked number 13. He scored a goal on 8 September 2004 in the Champions League match against

Real Madrid

, ending 4-2 for the Spanish team.

He scored again in the match against

Inter

, played the following 3 October, resulting in a 3-3 draw. However, during the match, he was involved in Obafemi Martins' injury, which led to his dismissal. De Rossi apologized to his opponent after the match for what had happened.

The club finished the season in eighth place and lost the Coppa Italia final to Inter. However, De Rossi ended the season with thirty appearances in the league, five in the Coppa Italia, and three in the Champions League. Following the season, Manchester United and Real Madrid both showed interest in acquiring the Roman talent.

At the beginning of the 2005-06 season, De Rossi scored one of the three goals for Roma in the league match they won against Reggina. His new coach, Luciano Spalletti, used the 4-5-1 system at the beginning of the season, in which De Rossi was deployed as a defensive midfielder and closer to the defensive line.

He wore the captain's armband for the first time in the UEFA Cup match against Middlesbrough on 15 March 2006. He scored a header four days later, on 19 March, in Roma v

Messina

, when he touched the ball with his hand. The referee validated the goal, but he admitted the foul with fair play and the goal was disallowed. However, in the same match, he suffered an ankle injury that kept him off the pitch for at least two weeks.

The team finished the season in fifth place, but following the scandal that suddenly swept through Italian football and the subsequent upheaval of the final standings, Roma became the runners-up and qualified for the

Champions League

. De Rossi finished the season with 34 appearances in the league, in which he scored six goals, three games in the Coppa Italia, a competition in which Roma reached the final again against Inter, only to be beaten by the Nerazzurri. In addition, he made seven appearances in the UEFA Cup. Starting the following season, De Rossi decided to wear the number 16 shirt.

During the 2006-2007 season, he made his mark at the international level. He made 36 appearances at the end of the season, scoring two goals. The team finished second in the league. That season he won his first Coppa Italia against Inter Milan: Inter was defeated with the resounding score of 6-2 in the first leg, played on 9 May at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

That season he won the AIC soccer Oscars as the best young player. In order to avoid future financial difficulties due to the uncontrolled increase in the club's management costs, the club decided to impose a salary cap of 2.5 million euros for each registered player, with the exception of captain Francesco Totti. Later on, for the same reason, the salary cap was not to be applied even to De Rossi himself.

In the 2007-2008 season, he scored on August 19, 2007, at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan that allowed the Giallorossi to triumph over Milan in the Italian Super Cup. In this season, with the forced absence due to the injury of captain Francesco Totti, De Rossi becomes the first penalty taker of the team, scoring penalties with Catania and Genoa.

On 9 April 2008, in the return match of the quarter-finals of the Champions League, played at Old Trafford in Manchester, he kicked a penalty high at 0-0.  The team lost the match against

Manchester United

1-0 and did not qualify for the semifinals. Roma finished the season in second place.

De Rossi won his second Coppa Italia on 24 May 2008 at the Stadio Olimpico again over Inter, defeated 2-1.

Changes in the coaching staff

At the first challenge of the 2008-2009 season, Roma failed to win the Italian Super Cup, a match in which De Rossi first scored a goal and then scored one of the shots from the penalty spot for the Giallorossi. The match ended in a 2-2 draw: the match was decided on penalty kicks, where Inter prevailed 8-7. De Rossi scored his first goal in a derby on 11 April 2009 in a

Lazio

-Roma match that ended 4-2. At season's end, the team finished sixth in Serie A, while in the Coppa Italia Roma's path ended in the quarterfinals.

Early in the 2009-2010 season, on September 13, 2009, during a Siena-Roma match (1-2), the Siena supporters intoned offensive chants against him, even insulting the memory of his father-in-law, Massimo Pisnoli, killed the previous year. The player attempted to approach the opposing fans' curve but was calmed down by the embrace of his teammates. On the following 6 December, during the derby against Lazio, De Rossi achieved 200 appearances in Serie A.

Despite the change on the bench between Spalletti and Ranieri, De Rossi continued to be crucial to the team. On 18 January 2010, he won his second Oscar of soccer: he was elected best Italian footballer AIC 2009. Also this season the team finished second in the league and lost the final of the Coppa Italia against Inter.

During the 2010-2011 season, De Rossi was the star player of Roma not only in the league but also in the Champions League, even though Ranieri was replaced by Montella. On 23 November 2010 in the home game of the Champions League against

Bayern Munich

scored the goal of the momentary 2-2 against the Germans, the game then ended with the victory of the Giallorossi 3-2.

On 4 February 2011, he was elected best Italian athlete of the year 2010 along with swimmer Federica Pellegrini by the Foreign Press Association in Italy. Roma finished the league in sixth place, while in the Coppa Italia they were eliminated in the semifinals by Inter.

In the 2011-12 season, Luis Enrique and Thomas DiBenedetto arrived as Roma's coach and president, respectively. At the end of this season, Roma finished seventh in the league. De Rossi finished the season with 32 appearances and 4 goals in the league.

In the 2012-2013 season, Roma is ranked sixth. This season is not very happy for the Giallorossi midfielder, partly because of the poor feeling with the coach Zdeněk Zeman of which he disputes the training sessions, according to him too hard. For this reason, De Rossi was relegated to the bench, losing his starting place.

On December 22, 2012, before the kick-off of Roma-Milan, De Rossi reached 400 appearances in the Giallorossi shirt, receiving a commemorative plaque from President Pallotta for the achievement. By the end of the season, De Rossi concluded with 25 appearances in the league and 4 appearances in the Coppa Italia, losing in the final against city rivals Lazio.

The arrival of Rudi Garcia and the return of Spalletti

Roma's 2013-2014 season saw the arrival of Rudi Garcia on the Roma bench, who immediately integrated De Rossi into his team. The player decided to stay at Roma, despite having been close to transfer to a new team. At the first game of the 2013-2014 season, on August 25, 2013, he scored again for Roma, after a hiatus of over 15 months.

He reached 318 appearances in Serie A on 10 November 2013 against Sassuolo (1-1), catching up with Giuseppe Giannini, Roma's historic captain, and played his 400th starting game in the Giallorossi shirt. However, on 11 May 2014, he reached the historic goalkeeper Guido Masetti and, surpassing him, became the third player with the most appearances in Serie A in the entire Roma history.

De Rossi's second season under Garcia coincided with Roma's return to the UEFA Champions League after three years. He scored his first goal of the season on 29 October in the 2-0 win over Cesena, scoring again in Serie A after almost a year since the last time. De Rossi scored on 20 January 2015 on a penalty kick in the Coppa Italia match against Empoli, leading the Giallorossi to the quarter-finals of the competition.

It was also against Empoli, On 17 October 2015 that he achieved his 500th appearance with Roma, where he also scored a goal in the 3-1 victory. He scored his first brace in European competitions the following 20 October, in the match between

Bayer Leverkusen

and Roma (4-4), which played in the group stage of the Champions League. Garcia was sacked on 14 January 2016 and replaced by the returning Spalletti, with De Rossi initially showing his enthusiasm for the coach.

During the 2016-2017 season which started with the defeat in the Champions League preliminary round against Porto, where De Rossi was also sent off in the return match, he scored in three consecutive games, his personal best, against Lazio,

AC Milan

, and Juve. He scored a goal on 28 May 2017, on the day of Francesco Totti's farewell, in the final league game won 3-2 at home against Genoa, enabling Roma to secure 2nd place and direct qualification to the Champions League group stage.

The seasons as captain

Having inherited the captain's armband, De Rossi remained at the top of the hierarchy of the team even with the new coach, Eusebio Di Francesco, who replaced Luciano Spalletti, confirming him in the role of the central midfielder in a three-man midfield formed alongside Nainggolan and Strootman.

Although in the league the Giallorossi failed to replicate the positive results achieved in the previous year, they still managed to finish third and qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, in the top European competition, the team achieved surprising results, reaching first the quarter-finals, then the semifinals, winning 3-0 in the quarter-final against Barcelona, in which De Rossi scored the second goal, on a penalty kick. Roma was then eliminated by Liverpool in the semifinals.

Unlike the successes of that season, where in the 2-3 win against Frosinone he wore the captain's armband for the 200th time, the next one was very difficult for De Rossi, after the arrival of the Frenchman Nzonzi, a midfield addition wanted by the general manager Monchi and disliked by De Rossi himself. In addition to the lack of contact between De Rossi and the Roma management regarding the renewal of his contract, which was to expire in 2019, and numerous physical problems that affected the performance of the captain.

After an up and down season, topped by the dismissal of Di Francesco and the return of Claudio Ranieri, Roma announced their decision not to renew De Rossi's contract. The Roma captain played his last match at the Olimpico on 26 May 2019, versus Parma, exactly 18 years after winning the third Scudetto, on the exact same field against the same team.

Upon being replaced, he handed over the armband to teammate Alessandro Florenzi, who was to become the new Giallorossi captain for the following season. He finished his career with the club with 616 appearances and 63 goals in all competitions in 18 years of service.

Italy National Team

De Rossi started his career in the Italian National Team playing in the Under-19 and later in the Under-20. Nevertheless, it was with the U-21 team, between 2003 and 2004, that his first impressive performances came. He won the 2004 European U-21 Championship as a starting player and in the same year, he won the Olympic bronze medal.

On September 4, 2004, he made his debut for the senior national team. He was called up by Marcello Lippi at the age of 21 and scored a goal in a 1-1 qualifying victory over Norway in Palermo for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In the following year, he donned the captain's armband for the first time in a friendly against Iceland.

His consistency in the Azzurri was well rewarded. In May 2006, he was in the 23-man squad for the World Cup in Germany. He started the competition as a regular, but during the last game of the group stage, against the United States, he elbowed Brian McBride and was only able to return in the final against France. During the final, he replaced his teammate Francesco Totti and was world champion in the penalty shootout, in which he scored one of the five penalties.

Following the World Cup, then-coach Roberto Donadoni tried to keep the winning base, even without one or another piece, such as Totti, who no longer played after 2006. De Rossi inherited his number 10 jersey and arrived at the 2008 European Championship as the star of the midfield. Nevertheless, in the first game against the Netherlands, which was lost 3-0, he was not selected.

In the next two matches that would put

Italy

in the quarter-finals, he was already a starter and even scored a goal in the victory against France by 2-0. Against Spain in the quarter-finals, he missed a penalty kick that, combined with the one Antonio Di Natale also missed, eliminated the Azzurri from the tournament.

The 2009 Confederations Cup was embarrassing for Italy. Wearing the 10, De Rossi scored in a 3-1 victory over the United States, the only one in the campaign, which was over in the group stage. The following year, at the 2010 World Cup, it was even more of a tragedy: another group stage elimination, and this time without a single victory. Wearing the number 6 shirt, De Rossi had some humble performances and scored in a 1-1 draw with Paraguay. Marcelo Lippi was in charge of both fiascos.

When Cesare Prandelli took over the national team, De Rossi resumed his good spell. With crucial performances and goals, he was again the main protagonist for the 2012 European Championship. During the competition - now wearing his well-known number 16 shirt and despite not scoring - he was of significant importance on the way to the final that resulted in second place in the championship against Spain.

At the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, the title went to the Brazilian national team, but the Italians had a great performance. De Rossi scored a goal against Japan in the first round, which was crucial in the 4-3 victory. Italy ended up taking third place after being knocked out by Spain in the semi-finals and beating Uruguay in the match for third place.

For the second World Cup in a row, Italy had a disappointing campaign. De Rossi put in discrete performances in the first two group matches - victory against England and defeat against Costa Rica - but he watched the team be eliminated in the final match against Uruguay.

He announced his retirement from the national team on November 13, 2017, after a draw with Sweden that left Italy out of the 2018 World Cup. In this section of Daniele De Rossi biography stay tuned as we want to share some information about his playing style.

Following a great performance by the Roman against Georgia in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Marcello Lippi, the former Italian national team coach, praised De Rossi as one of the best midfielders in the world alongside England's Lampard and Gerrard.
