y began when a group of young men was unhappy with the Catholic church-sponsored Trinity Youth, a club where they played football under the eye of a careless local parish priest named Father Dewald, and Dortmund was founded 19 December 1909.There were eighteen football players from Dortmund that found Borussia Dortmund including Franz and Paul Braun, Henry Cleve, Hans Debest, Paul Dziendzielle, Franz, Julius and Wilhelm Jacobi, Hans Kahn, Gustav Müller, Franz Risse, Fritz Schulte, Hans Siebold, August Tönnesmann, Heinrich and Robert Unger, Fritz Weber and Franz Wendt.

It's also worth mentioning that the club's name was taken from Borussia beer from the nearby Borussia brewery in Dortmund but also keep in mind that  Borussia is Latin for Prussia.

Over the next decades, the club enjoyed only modest success playing in local leagues and after the rise of the Third Reich, Borussia's president was replaced when he refused to join the Nazi Party.The club did have greater success in the newly established Gauliga Westfalen, which was the highest football league in the Prussian province of Westphalia but would have to wait until after World War II to make a breakthrough. Cleary, Dortmund was disliked by many European leagues and clubs just like other German clubs because of their so-recent Nazi past.

The club's first national league appearance came in 1949. Dortmund was featured in the Oberliga West Between 1946 and 1963, and they managed to win two titles Back to back in 1956 and 1957. The squad of that time contained the three Alfredos, Alfred Preißler, Alfred Kelbassa, and Alfred Niepieklo which are considered legends in Dortmund history.After the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1963, Dortmund earned its place among the first sixteen clubs to play in the league by winning the last pre-Bundesliga national championship.

After winning their first DFB-Pokal and a European Cup Winners Cup Dortmund began to have financial problems through the 70s and 80s and got regelated from Bundesliga in 1972 but returned in 1976.Then came the 1990s which is considered a golden age for Dortmund. They won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 1995 and 1996, reached and defeated

in 1996–97 European Cup final, and went on to beat Brazilian club Cruzeiro 2–0 in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup Final to become world club champions.

The continuation of Dortmund history had its ups and downs too as they faced serious relegation trouble for the first time in years in 2006 or they didn't win a Bundesliga title for about nine years. They managed to lift the trophy in 1996–97 the team reached its first European Cup final against Juventus. In a memorable match at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Dortmund faced the holders of Juventus. Karl-Heinz Riedle put Dortmund ahead, shooting under goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi. Riedle then made it two with a bullet header from a corner kick. In the second half, Alessandro Del Piero pulled one back for Juventus. Then a 20-year-old substitute Lars Ricken latched onto a through pass by Andreas Möller. Only 16 seconds after coming on to the pitch, Ricken chipped Peruzzi in the Juventus goal from over 20 yards out with his first touch of the ball. Dortmund won the championship with a 3–1 victory.

Another memorable UCL final match that Dortmund took a part in was the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern Munich in the first-ever all-German club final at Wembley Stadium on 25 May, which they lost 2–1 after Arjan Roben took the lead in the last minutes of the game with a left-footed low shot.

But it's worth mentioning that since 2020 1&1 Ionos became Dortmund's shirts sponsor only in Bundesliga matches. Dortmund's other shirt sponsors through the years were Continentale s. Oliver, E.ON, and a couple of other sponsors.

Dortmund's second kit also contains the colors Black and Yellow but instead of yellow shirts and black shorts, there are black shirts and yellow shorts with some black dots on the shirt.We also should mention that Puma is Dortmund's kit manufacturer since 2012 a.after they got out of a contract with Kappa. The contract is valid until 2025.

Dortmund logo history never changes through the years except for a couple of years Between 1976-1978.

Their first logo was created in 1945 and Dortmund badge history began from there and it pretty much stayed the same even today except for 2 years when BVB found a new main sponsor and their first BVB kit sponsor Samson, a tobacco company. Apart from the two years, It always included three letters “BVB” and the number “09” below, the same color scheme, the same circle shape with a black outline. The original logo included the word “Dortmund”.Just like their kits, BVB's logo always contained the Black and Yellow combination. Even in the 1976-1978 version. And it is because of that we nicknamed them Die Schwarzgelben which means "The Black and Yellows."

Dortmund claimed its first national title, which was won in Oberliga West, in 1956 with a 4–2 win against Karlsruher SC. They remained the national champions when they defeated Hamburger SV 4–1.Since then BVB gathered six more league championships which makes them the second most decorated club in Germany with 8 national League championships. But if we only count Bundesliga competitions(from 1963 till now) Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach are tied together with 5 title wins.The club won Bundesliga in seasons: 1994–95, 1995–96, 2001–02, 2010–11, 2011–12.

Other domestic trophies in the Dortmund trophies history are including four DFB-Pokals and four DFB/DFL-Supercups which in order were won in 1964–65, 1988–89, 2011–12, 2016–17 and 1989, 1995, 1996, 2013, 2014, 2019.At the international level, there aren't that many trophies in Dortmund history but the honors that they gathered through the years are still worth mentioning.Dortmund has won one UEFA Champions League in 1996 against Juventus in a very memorable match which ended up in a 3-1 result. Borussia Dortmund vs. Schalke 04

The rivalry between Dortmund and

goes back to May 1925 when The Royal Blues achieved a 4–2 victory against BVB. These clubs, which both are located in Ruhr region, compete in a derby named Revierderby. But it must be stated that the Revierderby is the name given to any match between two clubs in the Ruhr but Shalke and Dortmund are the strongest in that area thus, it almost always refers to the derby between the two main clubs.

The derby most of the time takes place in Veltins-Arena (Schalke) or Signal Iduna Park(Dortmund). But some matches have taken apart in stadiums like Parkstadion, Glückauf-Kampfbahn, Rote Erde, etc.

Till now, these two German clubs have faced each other for a total of 156 times(180 if we count Friendlies) which Schalke won 60, BVB 53, and 43 matches ended in a draw. So, Schalke has the lead in one of the biggest football rivalries in the world. The latest game between the clubs was on 16 May 2020 which BVB won 4-0.

Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund

When these two dominating forces face each other in Der Klassiker or commonly known as "German Clasico" there is no match in German football that can top this derby.Most of the time the events took place in either Allianz Arena, Munich, or Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund. The game often sees record attendance but of course not during COVID 19.

In the early days, Dortmund was stronger and on 16 October 1965, when was the two clubs first match, BVB won 2–0. Even On 5 May 1966, Dortmund won the 1965–66 European Cup Winners' Cup against Liverpool and became the first German club to achieve that trophy.But then, Bayern's dominance began. Bayern won the European Cup Winners' Cup and gained some victories against their rivals but the real deal was in 1971 when Bayern defeated Dortmund 11–1. That's s Bayern's biggest Bundesliga victory!

These days both Bayern and Dortmund are still great teams and the players of the teams play with an effort to win their rival and this is one of the reasons that place this match among the Greatest Rivalries in World Football, There have been 127 games between these two german clubs which Bayern have won the most matches(61 official matches).

The stadium of Borussia Dortmund is Westfalenstadion which is Germany's largest stadium and the seventh-largest in Europe. When insurance company Signal Iduna bought the rights to name the stadium until 2021, the official name changed to "Signal Iduna Park". Of course, it cannot be used when hosting FIFA and UEFA events.During the 2006 World Cup, the stadium was referred to as "FIFA World Cup Stadium, Dortmund", and in UEFA club matches, it is known as "BVB Stadion Dortmund".

is 65,829 seated spectators for international matches and 81,359 standing and seated spectators for league matches.In the 1960s, as the popularity of Borussia Dortmund gradually increased, it was obvious that the old stadium was very small for the increasing number of Borussia Dortmund supporters. So, in 1974 the Westfalenstadion replaced the Stadion Rote Erde. The two stadiums are located next to each other and the old one is now used as the stadium of Borussia Dortmund II.  however, was not able to finance a new stadium and federal institutions were unwilling to help.

in 1971, Dortmund has replaced the city of Cologne, which was forced to withdraw its plans to host games in the 1974 World Cup and as the result, the funds set aside for the projected stadium in Cologne were re-allocated to Dortmund, and a new stadium became reality.

During these years many renovations have bern done to the Westfalenstadion to increase the size of the stadium. One of them was an expansion of the stadium for the 2006 World Cup. In 2008, a museum about Borussia Dortmund opened in the stadium. In 2011, following a partnership agreement with the Q-Cells company, the mentioned company installed 8,768 solar cells on the roof of the Westfalenstadion to generate up to 860,000 kWh per year

It might be interesting for you to know that Borussia Dortmund has the highest average attendance of any football club in the world. In 2014, it was estimated that each of the home games of the club is attended by around 1,000 British spectators due to the low ticket prices of these games in comparison to the other Premier League.

Ottmar Hitzfeld

Ottmar Hitzfeld is one of the most successful coaches of German and international football. He has been elected "World Coach of the Year" twice; he is one of only five managers to win the European Cup/UEFA Champions League with two clubs, along with Ernst Happel, José Mourinho, Jupp Heynckes, and Carlo Ancelotti.

He is the most successful manager in Dortmund as well. Hitzfeld won both the Bundesliga and Supercup twice and helped the club to win their first and only champions league trophy.He became the manager of Dortmund in 1991. In his first year, Dortmund became second in the league and the next year he managed to help the club to reach the UEFA Cup finals but they lost to Juventus. 

In 1995 and 1996 Dortmund won the Bundesliga but their greatest achievement which is winning the UEFA Champions League in 1997 against Juventus. He left Dortmund and joined Bayern Munich in 1998 with a record of 144 wins, 63 draws, and 65 losses.

Matthias Sammer            

Matthias Sammer is the first person in Dortmund history to win the Bundesliga as both a player and manager. Matthias Sammer played his career from the mid-'80s till the late 90s and has represented several clubs such as VfB Stuttgart, Inter Milan, and Borussia Dortmund. He was awarded the Ballon d'Or in 1996 and is one of the best Bundesliga defenders of all time.

He played at different positions which shows how versatile he is. For most of his professional career he played as a defensive midfielder but most of the time he played as a libero at Dortmund. He even played as a striker when he was playing for Dynamo Dresden.

After retirement, Sammer became head coach of Borussia Dortmund on 1 July 2000. Sammer led Borussia Dortmund to another Bundesliga title in 2002. His team reached the 2001–02 UEFA Cup final the same year but lost 2–3 against Feyenoord. Sammer was sacked at the end of the 2003–04 season after Dortmund finished in sixth place.

Jürgen Klopp

Jürgen Klopp served seven yeaars as a manager at Dortmund.Before he became a manager, spent most of his playing career at Mainz 05; a hard-working and physical player, he was initially deployed as a striker.He then became his club's manager and eventually Became Dortmund'd coach in 2008. guiding them to the Bundesliga title in 2010–11, before winning Dortmund's first-ever domestic double during a record-breaking season.] Klopp also guided Dortmund to a runner-up finish in the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League before leaving in 2015 as their longest-serving manager.
