Steve Nicol

One of the Best ever Liverpool Defenders who played as a right-back. Stephen Nicol joined The Reds in 1981 at the age of 20. He was born on 11 December 1961 in Troon, Scotland.Nicol spent 14 years playing for Liverpool.through those years, he won five Football League First Division titles, three FA Cup winners medals, and the 1984 European Cup.

Nicol was a very gifted footballer and that’s why he is one of the Best Liverpool Defenders of all time. He was excellent in defense as well as in attack. even In his first full season, he came second in PFA's vote for the most promising player of the year in 1983-84.

He made his debut for Reds on 31 August 1982 in a league match with Birmingham City at St Andrew's. The match ended up in a 0-0 draw. That year he made three league appearances which were not enough to collect a title winner's medal when The Reds finished as league champions that season.

Generally, he appeared on The Reds side for a total of 468 times and scored 46 goals during those matches..He moved on to Notts County in 1994 and stayed there for 2 years. After 22 years of playing, he retired in 2001.

Mark Lawrenson

Mark Thomas Lawrenson is a former Irish international footballer who played for Liverpool as a central defender. He was born on 2 June 1957. He was in his mid 20's when he played for The Reds.

He joined the club in 1981 when he was offered a club transfer record of £900,000. He formed an impressive central defensive partnership with Alan Hansen and was often used as a left-back.For nearly a decade, Lawrenson guarded the heart of the Reds' defense and won five league titles with them.

He possessed great speed and skill .also his abilities in tackling and strength were brilliant. That's why he is among the

During his 7 years in Liverpool, He made 356 appearances and scored 18 goals. He then moved on to Barnet 1988 and retired a year after. He is 63 this year.And let's not forget that he has a successful career as a football pundit on the BBC. 

John Arne Riise

John Arne Semundseth Riise is a former Norwegian footballer who played for Liverpool as a Left-back. He also played in The Reds shirt for 7 years.He joined Liverpool in 2001 and made his debut for Liverpool on the 2001 UEFA Super Cup game against

Bayern Munich

which he scored the first goal of the match.

He also played an important role in the 2005 Champions League when he provided the assist for Liverpool's first goal of the final. That match was one of the greatest comebacks of all time.

Chris Lawler

The former Reds right-back, Christopher Lawler can be named as one of the Best Liverpool Defenders of all time.He had a record of 61 goals through his 15-year career in Liverpool which is extraordinary for a defensive player who wasn't even the club's specialist in penalties or free-kicks. He was actually born in Liverpool on 20 October 1943 and raised there.

He began his senior career with Liverpool in October 1960 at the age of 17 but he made his debut at the age of 19.His debut match was a league game against West Bromwich Albion at Liverpool's stadium, Anfield on 20 March 1963 which ended up in a draw.

After 549 games with Liverpool, Lawler left the club in 1975 and joined Portsmouth and played there for 3 years. He retired in 1981.Chris is now living the 76th year of his life.

Sami Hyypia

Sami Tuomas Hyypiä is a Finnish former footballer who played as a center back. He played for several clubs which Liverpool is one of them.Hyypia was born on 7/10/73 in Porvoo, Finland. He began his senior career with Kumu and a year after he moved to Veikkausliiga outfit MyPa.Then he joined a Dutch club named Willem II where he stayed for 4 years.Hyypia eventually joined Liverpool in May 1999. It only cost Liverpool £2.5million which is surprising. He made his debut for The Reds against Sheffield Wednesday on August 7, 1999.

Hyypia's partnership with Stephane Henchoz was solid and it was one of the reasons due to which Liverpool ended up with a historic treble in 2000-01 including the Football League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup.He formed another central-defensive partnership with Jamie Carragher which was regarded as one of the most formidable pairings on the continent.

You might find it interesting that in 2002, Hyypia became first-choice Liverpool captain after the injury of Jamie Redknapp. He jointly lifted both the UEFA and FA Cups.

Alan Kennedy

This former English defender who played the majority of his career as a left-back is next on the list of Best Liverpool Defenders ever. He was born on 31 August in Penshaw, England. Kennedy was signed to Liverpool in 1978 on a transfer fee of £330000. It was a British transfer record fee for a full-back. When he made his Reds debut against Queens Park Rangers, no one thought that he would be among the

Best Liverpool Defenders of all time

but that was just the beginning.

Kennedy appeared in 37 league games for each of his first two seasons for the Reds and won the League Championship medals on both occasions.Alan saved the Reds from losing for several times. Once, He scored the equalizing goal against Manchester United, which Liverpool won in extra time, in the 1983 League Cup Final with 15 minutes left from the game. Although, His most memorable moment is definitely when he scored the only goal of the match in the 1981 European Cup Final against Real Madrid.

Kennedy was transferred to Sunderland in 1986 after he played a total of 359 matches in the red shirt. 

Tommy Smith

Liverpool born center back Tommy Smith is another great footballer that claims a place among the

Best ever Liverpool Defenders

. He was born on the 5th of April 1945 and joined the Reds in 1962.

He made his first appearance in the Reds shirt on 8 May 1963 against Birmingham City when he was replaced with Jimmy Melia due to his injury. That night Liverpool won 5-1.

He played in the heart of the defense beside Ron Yeats, but he also covered many other positions during his Liverpool career.

He was known for an uncompromising defensive style and he is considered as one of the toughest players Liverpool has ever seen. Smith used psychological behaviour to threaten and intimidate opposition players.

Smith was nicknamed "The Anfield Iron".But the interesting fact is that he only sent off once in his whole career and that one time was due to his rudely speaking with the referee. 

Smith made 638 appearances, scored 48 goals, and won more than 10 trophies with the Reds.

According to his daughter, after "growing increasingly frail and suffering from a variety of ailments over the last three months" Unfortunately, he passed away on 12 April 2019.

Phil Neal

Philip George Neal is the next name on the list of Best Liverpool Defenders of all time. He is the most decorated player in Liverpool history. He won a total of 23 titles with the Reds including eight First Divisions, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, four European Cups, one UEFA Cup, and one UEFA Super Cup. Neal was born on 20 February 1951 in Irchester that is a village in the Borough of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, England. He began his senior career at Northampton Town and made 187 appearances for the club.

He got signed to Liverpool on 9 October 1974 for £66,000. He was one of Bob Paisley’s first managerial signings. He was a replacement for the left-back Chris Lawler.however, his best performances were in a right-back position.

Phil was nicknamed "Zico", which was the name of a Brazilian playmaker, because of the important goals he scored during the club's history. He scored a goal in the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Monchengladbach and one against AS Roma in the 1984 final and so on. unfortunately, he was the captain on the night of the Heysel stadium disaster where 39 people died. But it doesn't change the fact that he is among the All-time Best Defenders at Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher

James Lee Duncan Carragher is one of the

as well as one of the most loyal footballers to have ever worn the red shirt. Carragher only played for one club for 25 years which is Liverpool.He joined the Reds and began his professional career in October 1996 when he was 18. he made his debut against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on 8 January 1997 under Roy Evans.

supporter and we all know these two clubs are old rivals. Nevertheless, he stayed in the club and became one of the Best Liverpool Defenders of all time later.

Carragher broke into the first team in the 1997–98 season. His enthusiasm, energy, and versatility soon ensured regular starts, whether at right-back, left-back, center-half, or defensive midfield.But we must state that he made most of his performances as a centre-back.He appeared in more than 700 matches with the Reds jersey which makes him one of the Liverpool players with the most appearances.

He was effective in many of Liverpool's games. One of the most famous of them is the 2005

Alan Hansen

Another Centre-back whose name is in the list of Best Liverpool Defenders of all time. Scottish former football player Alana David Hansen was born on 13 June 1955 and joined the Reds in 1977. It cost Liverpool £100,000.Hansen made his Reds debut on 24 September 1977 in a league home match against Derby County. They were defeated 1-0.

Rated by many as the club's finest ever center-half, Hansen was calm under pressure, Cool on the ball, and very intelligent.The Reds former manager Bob Paisley once said:'' Alan Hansen is the defender with the pedigree of an international striker. He is quite simply the most skillful center-half I have ever seen in the British game''.

He was in Liverpool for almost 15 years. During this period, he won eight league championships and three European Cups. Hansen was a powerful individual in the Reds defense, and his talent to read the game and shackle an opposition attack was extraordinary.He made 620 appearances for Liverpool but didn't score much but of course, it is proof that he was in the right position. He finally retired in 1991 after almost 15 years of magic.Like his teammate Mark Lawrenson, he had a successful career as a football pundit too.
