Inter Milan Highest Transfer Fee Paid Ever

Here are

Inter Milan most expensive transfers ever

, most of whom ironically haven’t been able to help Inter lift the Serie A Cup and other major trophies during their own playing days.

Romelu Lukaku

Number one on the list of Inter Milan most expensive signings ever is Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku joined Italian club Inter Milan on 8 August 2019, signing a five-year contract for a fee reported to be a club record €80 million. He made his debut on 26 August in the opening Serie A matchday against Lecce, netting his side's third goal with his first shot in a 4–0 home win.

The goal meant that Lukaku has found the net in his first league game for five of the six clubs he has represented; Anderlecht, West Brom, Everton, Manchester United, and Inter; he also become only the third Belgian to score for Inter in Serie A, after Enzo Scifo and Radja Nainggolan. Lukaku has rightfully been the number one player on the list of Inter Milan most expensive signings ever.

Christian Vieri

Vieri caught Lippi's eye when they worked together in Juventus. Lippi handed in a request to Massimo Moratti, and then, a world record transfer happened! A record transfer of €49 million (90 billion Italian lire, £32 million) to Inter Milan in 1999! Inter would be Vieri's ninth club in his ninth season of being a professional footballer, and the only one where he would play for more than one season, for a total of six.

There still is a lot of talk among Inter fans and football pundits as to whether Vieri was worth this much or not. Christian Vieri scored some phenomenal goals for Inter Milan during six years of appearance, despite many injuries. He scored 103 goals in 143 caps for Inter. He was unlucky to be injured for most of the crucial games and missing out some important matches. Vieri showed that he deserved the world record transfer and he was rightfully on the list of

Nicolo Barella

Third on our list of Most expensive Inter transfers of all time is Nicolo Barella. Barella first joined Inter on a loan deal in July 2019, with an obligation to buy him with four- year contract to take effect after the loan period. Barella is considered as a hot prospect, he is reflected as a promising and highly talented young midfielder in the European sports media. He was named the best young Italian player born in 1997 for two successive years between 2012 and 2013.

Barella is a player who can dribble through a defense, score volleys and start counter-attacks. He knows how to find the right passes and is box-to-box. Most importantly he can win back possession quickly and recover the ball. If he can work on his temper with the referees, he can prove himself as a worthwhile signing for Nerazzuri. Pundits believe that Barella deserves to be on the list of

Achraf Hakimi

Next on our list of Most expensive Inter Milan signings ever is the club's famous player, Achraf Hakimi.

Hakimi is a powerful, dynamic and quick full-back who has played for Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund throughout his career as well. When he was loaned to Dortmund, he scored a brace against Inter Milan to turn a 2-0 defeat into a 3-2 win for Dortmund. Hakimi signed for Inter Milan on July 2nd with a five-year contract. Many have argued that 40 million is a high fee for Hakimi as a full-back.

With his raw pace, strength and athleticism, Hakimi leaves opposing full-backs for dust. He has been deployed further forward this season by Dortmund coach Lucien Favre – most notably against Internazionale in the Champions League, scoring twice. He is capable of playing on either flank, too. Hakimi is an explosive prospect and deservedly added his name to the list of Inter Milan most expensive signings ever.

Joao Mario

On 27 August 2016, João Mário signed with Inter Milan for €40 million plus €5 million in bonuses, adding his name to the list of

Inter Milan most expensive signings ever

. Mario struggled with Italian culture and the city of Milan.

By the time of Mario’s signing, Inter had gone through managerial modification. Roberto Mancini left the club by mutual agreement on 8 August and, within a day of his exodus, former Ajax boss Frank de Boer had been appointed as his replacement. The new head coach brought with him his own ideas, though there were a few observable concerns from last season that had to be ironed out first, many of which regarded Inter’s midfield structure, or lack thereof.

Mario brought much needed penetrative passing and clever movement to the middle third for Inter.

Under the new manager, Luciano Spalletti, Joao Mario became highly frustrated since he found little time to play. He was loaned to West Ham United. The loan contract included an option for West Ham to buy the player for a sum in the region of 40 million Euros. He is under Inter Milan contract, but he is playing for Sporting CP with a loan contract. Joao Mario does not deserve to be on this list, but he is on the list of

Internazionale’s all-time most expensive signings

Radja Nainggolan

Nainggolan is a complex fellow. He is one of Inter Milan most expensive signings ever, but the question is, does he deserve to be on this list?

On 26 June 2018, Nainggolan signed with Inter Milan for €38 million (€24 million plus Davide Santon and Nicolò Zaniolo, valued at €14 million) Nainggolan is a highly qualified, but extremely controversial player. He is one of the players who can totally turn the tie around all by himself. Yet, his drinking and smoking problems has caused headaches for Antonio Conte.

He posted a video on Instagram, cursing in Italian, drinking alcohol and smoking. Perhaps this is the reason Conte loaned him to Caligari this season. Nainggolan has also been praised for his leadership in the media. Considered by many experts to be one of the best and most complete midfielders in Europe, due to his ability to aid his team both offensively and defensively, Nainggolan is a quick, dynamic, hard-working, physically strong and versatile midfielder, who is capable of playing in several midfield positions.

Geoffrey Kondogbia

Kondogbia arrived with high hopes and expectations.

On 22 June 2015, Inter Milan announced that they had signed Kondogbia on a five-year deal for an initial fee of €31 million, subject to a medical, beating a reported €40m bid from city rival A.C. Milan. He scored his first goal for his new team on 8 November, the only away against Torino FC. On 21 August 2017, Valencia CF announced that they reached an agreement with Internazionale for the loan of Kondogbia until 30 June 2018, with an option to make the deal permanent.

Kondogbia is a lively and industrious defensive midfielder. Fundamentally, the role of a defensive midfielder is to sit in front of the defensive line, mop up loose balls, make decisive tackles and intelligent interceptions to stop threatening opposition plays before become a danger.

Kondogbia does most of that to a very high standard. He is on the list of

Hernan Crespo

Crespo is deservedly on the list of

Inter Milan most expensive signings ever

.

On 31 August 2002, Crespo, expected to shine again after suffering from injuries, signed with Inter Milan as a replacement for the departed Ronaldo for a €26 million fee and Bernardo Corradi. Lazio later re-valued Corradi to €5.5 million. Crespo scored 7 goals in 3 appearances and 9 goals in 12 UEFA Champions League caps, until he was plagued with injuries in 2003.

Crespo was a fast, persistent, potent, and complete striker, that possessed good technique, composure in possession, and an eye for goal; he also topped in the air. A prolific and opportunistic goal-scorer, he was capable of finishing well both with his feet and with his head, and was known for his ability to score acrobatic goals. He was also effective off the ball due to his work-rate, tactical intelligence, and attacking movement, which he often used to provide depth for his team or create space for his teammates. Despite his ability, he faced several injuries throughout his career, which limited his playing time at times.

Milan Skriniar

Skriniar is the most expensive Slovak player in the world and is also on the list of Inter Milan most expensive signings ever.

He signed a 5-year deal in 2017 with Nerazzuri. Milan Skriniar has proved himself a worthwhile signing with his distinguished performances in UEFA Champions League and Serie A. Apparently, one of the reasons Conte was convinced to sign for Inter was the presence of Diego Godin and Milan Skriniar.

Škriniar has been described as a defender who is a strong tackler who is quick to make clearances. A natural center-back, he can also be deployed as a defensive midfielder. Milan Škriniar is already one of Europe's best defenders. he is fantastic one on one, strong in the air, he's quick and powerful and his positioning is excellent. Add his progressive passing and you have a centre-back capable of playing at every single one of Europe's top clubs. All the aforementioned qualities, make Skriniar capable of being in the list of

most expensive signings in Inter Milan history

.

Alessandro Bastoni

Last but not least on our list of most expensive signings in Inter Milan history, is Alessandro Bastoni. Isn't it ironic to pay 31.10 million Euros for an 18 year old defender and keep loaning him to other clubs? Well, that is what Inter has been doing for years. One of the

most expensive Inter transfers of all time

. That is probably the real reason they haven't been able to achieve any major trophies. Bastoni signed for Inter Milan in 2017, and has only played 35 caps for Nerazzuri. Bastoni has been held as a high regard for his outstanding capabilities.

Giueseppe Bergomi, the Italian legend talked about Bastoni in Sep 2020. Bergomi expected Bastoni’s growth to be quick and strong. “Let’s take Bastoni, his growth is seen by everyone but I’m sure he can do even better and immediately become one of the strongest in Europe.” The Italian commented on how the 21-year-old Italian defender’s tactical flexibility in defense is helpful for both club and country.

“In Conte’s three-man defense of, he has proven to have unique characteristics and today many coaches like to start with three and then move to four during the game. Alessandro is perfect for this, with Conte but also in Mancini’s Italy.

“You can see it clearly and you are immediately impressed by the personality and the quality of the player.  "Finally, Bergomi touched on some issues that Bastoni needs to iron out if he is to grow into one of the strongest defenders in Serie A and Europe. “But now he has to improve his defending during open play. Sometimes last season he got caught behind with space behind him and in a team like Inter that loves to push and attack the game you have to be careful not to concede too much space behind.”

Bastoni is the youngest player on the list of
