Bayern Munich beat Sevilla to complete quadruple

Javi Martinez netted the winner as Bayern Munich won 2-1 over Sevilla in Thursday's UEFA Super Cup in Budapest.

After extra-time in Thursday night's UEFA Super Cup, Bayern Munich defeated

Sevilla

2-1. As Lucas Ocampos scored a penalty, Bayern endured an initial setback, however, Leon Goretzka netted the equalizer after half-time. The game went into extra-time, without any goals to come in the second half amid Bayern's domination. Yet Javi Martínez netted the second goal for

Bayern Munich

sealing the second UEFA Super Cup trophy for German giants.

With Manuel Neuer in goal, Bayern Munich began with Benjamin Pavard, Niklas Sule, David Alaba, and Lucas Hernandez in the defensive line. In a twin holding position behind Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, and

Serge Gnabry

, Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich highlighted and upfront with Robert Lewandowski. Nearly halfway into the second half, Corentin Tolisso substituted Sane, with Martinez, Alphonso Davies, and Jerome Boateng coming on in extra time for the Bavarians.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Sevilla

Bayern continued as aggressively as ever against the Europa League champions, pushing relentlessly in an attempt to put down a significant marker, not happy with only winning the treble last campaign. However, amid the early superiority in terms of possession, once

Lucas Ocampos

converted his penalty shot, it was Sevilla who edged ahead. In any case, Leon Goretzka expertly netted the equalizer from Lewandowski's assist.

At the other end, Luuk de Jong had the ball in the net, but it was correctly called out for offside as the team headed into the break Hansi Flick's men started the second half offensively yet attempts were disallowed. While Bayern continued powerful and produced more opportunities, Sevilla proved aggressive on the counter-attacks.

After all, they possibly should've just won the game in the 87th minute but El-Nesyri lost the chance as

Manuel Neuer

made a spectacular save to hold Bayern in it. As extra time continued, FC Bayern looked more likely to be successful, and due to Martinez's strong header after a corner, they got their prize late on.

As the Spaniard came off the bench to score the winning goal against Sevilla,

Javi Martinez

was the surprising hero of Bayern Munich. The treble-winners battled over a persistent team that had been undefeated since February.

Goretzka leveled before half-time, yet had Youssef En-Nesyri not been stopped by Manuel Neuer through last seconds of regular time, Bayern's streak of 22 consecutive wins would have come to an end. It was an absolutely surprising event as Martinez scored his first goal since April 2019.

There are now 23 consecutive victories for Bayern Munich, they have played 32 matches without a single loss. Even after selling  Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool, this season they would once again be favorites for any big competition.

Match stats

In their last 32 games, Bayern are now victorious, winning 31 and netting 108 times.

In 16 competitive games this calendar year, Lewandowski has bagged 16 goals, namely five in 7 European matches.

Bayern Munich turned into the first club of all time to win every match headed straight to winning the UEFA Champions League last campaign with 11 wins.

For the first time in 2013, FC Bayern won the Super Cup by defeating Chelsea on penalties after the game ended 2-2.

In the 2017/18 UCL quarter-final, Sevilla lost the game in their only encounter with Bayern 2-1.

Between July 2007 and January 2011, Rakitic had played 97 Bundesliga matches for Schalke, bagging 12 goals and 23 assists. In his 10 previous matches against Bayern, he lost seven.

FCB have dominated Spanish teams on neutral ground

Bayern Munich faced a club from Spain on neutral ground for the 4th time in all. After their 4-0 victory in the 1974 European Cup final against Atletico Madrid, and their dramatic 5-4 penalty win over Valencia in 2001 at Milan's San Siro, soccer fans are extremely likely to remember the latest battle when they defeated Barcelona 8-2.

Dominant Diego Carlos

The two center-backs of Sevilla, Diego Carlos, and Jules Kounde, were both perfect and their reputations can only be improved by this result. Specifically, Diego Carlos was amazing, producing a game-high 16 clearances, 7 more than any player plus two blocks.

Alaba all at sea

Austria international Alaba had a successful shifting to center-back in his footsteps, yet maybe the current debate about his future is having an effect.

To concede the goal, he was caught the wrong side of Rakitic, missing the goal with two set-pieces, and lost the ball 23 times, the second-most behind Muller among Bayern players.

Rakitic highlights Neuer brilliance

As Bayern claimed a 2-1 win, Ivan Rakitic felt Manuel Neuer was the difference in the game. Sevilla appeared to be stubborn rivals, and substitute Youssef En-Nesyri came close to stopping Bayern's 22-game winning streak once at the point when put through in the 87th minute, only for Neuer to score the goal.

As he flicked a right foot out to redirect En-Nesyri's attempt to the post at the beginning of extra time, the German international attempted an even better saving for FC Bayern.

"It's frustrating, but that's soccer," Rakitic told Sky. " We saw how essential Neuer is to them tonight. We had two perfect opportunities to go forward, yet he stopped them. So we gave away a stupid corner and they scored.

"We should be proud of how we played over the best team in Europe, and we feel well-positioned for the new season."

" It was a really fair match, and in the end, they were the ones who could score the winner, however, we had our chances, "he said.

"We had scored the opening goal and many opportunities but we didn't take them. We've got to fight back and keep going."

Flick delighted for Bayern's match-winner Martinez

For Hansi Flick, it felt good that Javi Martinez was the surprising Super Cup hero of Bayern Munich only a day after he was confirmed to going back to

Athletic Bilbao

after eight years.

Martinez came off the bench and in 5 minutes he scored the winning goal that won the treble-winners more trophies.

The goal was his first since April 2019, and as rumors of a transfer to LaLiga outfit Athletic continue, it could be the last of his eight-year Bayern spell.

The Spaniard is in the final year of his Bayern contract, and sources say that considering Athletic's desire to get him back to Spain as a free agent, the treble winners want a transfer fee for the player.

" Javi scored the goal and saved the game for us. Sometimes these stories are written by football-this is a wonderful story," Manager Flick stated.

"There were rumors on Wednesday that he was in Bilbao, and he netted the winning goal tonight."

In Bayern's previous Super Cup victory 7 years ago, Martinez also came off the bench to net an extra-time goal, as they defeated

Chelsea

.

They prevailed in 120 minutes this time, In spite of conceding the first goal by Lucas Ocampos before Leon Goretzka leveled ahead of half-time.

It may not have been as complete as of last week's 8-0 victory against Schalke in the Bundesliga, yet Flick was nonetheless content with the lasting power of his side.

"It took us the first 15 minutes to get into the game," stated Flick.

"It was amazing for me to see the squad strive to pull through in their attitude to win. In the end, to survive, my players went through the pain barrier."

Till they get a new shot at winning a trophy in the DFL-Supercup versus

Borussia Dortmund

, Bayern continue their Bundesliga challenge at

Hoffenheim

on Sunday. Sevilla will launch their LaLiga campaign on Sunday at freshly-promoted

Cadiz

.
