Euro 2020: Germany v Hungary match preview- team news, lineups

How will Germany line up against the underdogs Hungary? Will Hungary manage to pull off yet another historic draw or even a win against the 2014 World Cup champions? Follow us below as we take a brief look at both national teams and their form so far.

Euro 2020 Group Stages will finally come to an end today, with the eight remaining teams completing their third match of the tournament at 18:00 and 21:00 CET. While

Sweden

face Poland, Slovakia take on

Spain

, Portugal meet their archrivals France and Hungary go on to battle with Germany. It is all up for grabs as Germany will surely be hoping for France to lose against Portugal, so that they can go through to the Round of 16 at the top of the group.

The so-called “Group of Death” is so open that even Hungary might have a chance of qualifying for the next stage of the tournament and there is still hope for everyone. Let’s see how each national team has been doing so far and how they might line up against each other.

Germany v Hungary match preview

How will things turn out for the teams competing in Group F? Will Germany manage to top their group? Will Hungary players live the best moments of their lives by making history against Germany? All will be revealed this evening as France take on Portugal and Germany host Hungary. Here’s how the two nations have performed so far.

Germany

Germany

are obviously still one of the favorites to win Euro 2020. After all, they are the 2014 World Cup champions and have so much firepower that can easily obliterate any team given the right performance. Even though Joachim Low’s men performed admirably against

France

and created so many chances, they lost their opening game against the French after failing to score a single goal. But they managed to compensate for their unfortunate defeat after thrashing Portugal 4-2 in their second game of the tournament.

With a defeat and a win in their record, Germany still have the chance to top Group F if they win their clash against Hungary while France lose to Portugal. Of course Didier Deschamps’ men will be doubly determined for redemption after losing Euro 2016 final to Portugal.

Hungary

From the very beginning of the tournament, everyone knew that

Hungary

were going to have a tough time against three goliaths of world football as they were drawn in the same group as France, Germany and

Portugal

. But while many expected Hungary to crumble under the sheer force of the likes of Germany and France, they have managed to hold their heads up by continuing their tradition of not losing against France.

That’s right, they managed to secure a crucial point against France in an intense 1-1 draw. Having scored against France shows that Hungary too have a chance of going through to the next stage as they can surprise us all with yet another brilliant performance. Anything can happen in the beautiful game of football, and many neutrals might like to see the underdogs have the upper hand for once.

Form analysis

Just like almost all the other national teams competing in Euro 2020, Germany too lacked accuracy and efficiency in front of goal in their first match of the group stage. This poor use of chances led to the Germans wasting so much of their efforts as only one of their ten shots was on target throughout the whole match against France. Even though they had 62% possession of the ball and had almost 300 more passes than their rivals, it was France who got the upper hand by converting one of their only four chances to end the game 1-0 in their favor.

Of course Germany managed to bounce back and deliver a much better performance in their clash against Portugal, where they had an amazing increase of quality in their accuracy in front of goal, which led to 7 of their 12 attempts being on target. With a stellar 90% pass accuracy throughout the 90 minutes, Germany had control of the pitch and the ball with a 58% possession. The results speak for themselves. They only need to repeat the same form to easily go past Hungary, who are clearly the underdogs on paper.

Germany possible lineup:

Manuel Neuer; Ginter, Mats Hummels, Antonio Rudiger; Joshua Kimmich, Ilkay Gundogan, Toni Kroos, Robin Gosens; Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz

It’s worth reiterating that accuracy is one of the most important aspects of football, which is exactly what led to Attila Fiola and his teammates making history against France with a 1-1 “win”. While the French had a total of 15 shots, only 4 made it towards the target.

On the other hand, Hungary made good use of their chances as 3 of their 5 shots were on target, which shows a 60% accuracy. Even though they lack the strength to keep the ball for too long, they can still be quite venomous on counterattacks, which is why they might have the chance to prove their worth by delivering an even better performance against Germany. Of course their hopes of going through to the next round might be low due to their 3-0 defeat against Portugal.

Hungary possible lineup:

Gulacsi; Botka, Orban, At. Szalai; Nego, Kleinheisler, Adam Nagy, Schafer, Attila Fiola; Ad. Szalai, Sallai.

Germany v Hungary: head-to-head in all competitions

Germany have faced Hungary quite so many times, with the current total number being 33. Even though almost all of them have been international friendlies, the two nations are quite familiar with each other’s football tactics and traditions. Germany have won 13 of the 33 games, while drawing 10 and losing the other remaining 10 games against Hungary.

Prediction

Even though Germany are obviously the favorites on paper and all odds are against Hungary, you never know what magic you’re going to witness in football.

Germany v Hungary referees

Russian referee Sergei Karasev will officiate the match alongside his assistants Igor Demeshko and Maksim Gavrilin. Italians Massimiliano Irrato, Marco Di Bello and Filippo Meli will act as the first to third VAR officials. Danny Makkelie from the Netherlands will be acting as the fourth official.
