All About Manchester United’s 2021-22 kit and the club’s history

Before going through the Red Devil’s kits, let’s take a look at the club’s history through all these years.

Manchester United’s history

To talk about Manchester United’s history, we must go back to the 1870s. During England’s industrial revolution, the City of Manchester was the one to be growing rapidly as some workers decided to travel to Manchester around that time. Becoming a very big city, Manchester also provided great opportunities for football clubs to be established in the city.

Manchester United, or Newton Heath L&YR Football Club as they named the club back in that time, was initially formed in 1878. Initially, the club’s founders were a group from a Railway company.

Their very first match was a 6-0 defeat against Bolton Wanderers in 1880 and their very first kit was a plain shirt with green and gold color.

The club eventually joined the First Division in 1892. However, they have been dropped in and out of the First Division several times, during their history.

It is also interesting to know that during their history they were also vanquished two times, once back in 1902 and due to their debts and then back in 1927 and after the club’s president, John Henry Davies passed away.

They were saved in 1902 after Captain Stafford found five businessmen who each agreed on a £500 investment with the intention of becoming the club’s owner.

Later they all agreed to take charge of certain roles. That’s how the club’s name, Manchester United was chosen.

The second time, however, was different, as James W. Gibson alone, invested in the club and took control of it.

Manchester United achieved their first English League title in 1908 under Ernest Mangnall. They won their first FA Community Shield and FA Cup in the following season, and that was the beginning of becoming such a beloved and famous club in the world.

The Red Devils’ jersey history

To talk about Manchester United’s kits history, we have to go back to the late 1870s. Back in that time the club’s first kit was determined to be a white-and-blue while their next jersey was a red-and-white shirt with dark blue knickerbockers according to a photo taken in 1892.

This jersey lasted as the Red Devils’ kits for two years, but then their kit changed to be a green and gold one. They later chose white shirts and navy blue shorts in 1896 as their new kit.

With these many changes, eventually, they changed their names to Manchester United and chose red shirts with white shorts and black socks to be their new colors. Today these colors are still the main club’s colors.

Since 1922 the colors of the kit stayed the same, with only the socks to be changed to white in 1960, and from white to red in 1963.

Manchester United badge history

Before becoming Manchester United, the Red Devils’ badge was a portrait of a train placed in a shield-shaped badge with Newton Heath L&YR F.C. letterings situated above the train, but then in 1948, the club introduced a brand new emblem.

Their new badge was completely red with a devil situated inside a shield and a ship placed above the devil (the shield was divided into two parts by a line), with two semi-circular frames placed above and under the shield. There were also two balls situated between the two frames.

The city emblem inspired the club’s next logo, with the ship still at the same place, the devil was removed and replaced by three diagonal black stripes. The balls changed to flowers, with Manchester United and Football Club words placed inside both upper and lower frames, which lasted until 1970. So far the club’s logo has had very small changes, staying mainly the same.

Manchester United kits’ manufacturers and sponsors

The next item to talk about regards Manchester United manufacturers and sponsors. Man Utd’s first manufacturer was Umbro, with whom United signed a 30-years contract from 1945 until 1975.

Their second kit supplier was Admiral, to whom they signed a five-year contract, which ended in 1980.

Their next kit supplier was one of the world’s most famous sportswear brands, Adidas.

Their contract with Adidas was extended in 1982, until 1992. However, later on Umbro took things under control and became the Red Devil’s designer for a second time from 1992 until 2002.

Nike arrived with a record of £302.9 million deal shortly afterward and brought a better set of well-built kits with simple designs on the shirts until 2015.

Today Manchester United’s kit supplier is Adidas, which returned in 2015 for a 10-year record-breaking deal worth £750 million.
