Top 10 Liverpool January Signings in History

Liverpool won the Premier League title in 2020 after a long time but failed to defend the title as Manchester City won the last season’s title. With Luis Diaz being the latest addition to the top 10 Liverpool January signings in history, the Reds’ hopes for title has been revived.

Another winter transfer window has come and gone and Premier League was as usual at the center of all the transfer talk around Europe. Liverpool was not a busy club this Premier League transfer window of January 2022 as is their habit. Jurgen Klopp seems to have constructed the perfect team containing of 17 or 18 quality players who could all be selected to start a game. So their transfer strategy veers toward bringing in quality and the transfer of Luis Diaz from Porto to

Liverpool

exactly aligns with that strategy as the Colombian was the last entry in the List of Liverpool new signing.

Seemingly a great addition for the Reds, Diaz wasn’t the only Liverpool January marquee signing as the fans can perfectly remember how the club bounced back through the history midseason with the signature of Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, and Virgil van Dijk.

Everything You Should Know About Top 10 Liverpool January Signings in History

Unlike Manchester City, for Jurgen Klopp the team’s stability is way more important as he avoids making a lot of changes in his squad. This policy in January signings, signing right players with right prices, is not that new as the fans know that Liverpool most expensive transfers are not necessarily the best addition with likes of Andy Carroll. With Luis Diaz being the first signing of Liverpool in the new year adding some quality to the most expensive player in Liverpool 2022

10. Maxi Rodriguez

The first entry in our list of the top 10 Liverpool January signings in history, Maxi Rodriguez, signed for Liverpool on a free transfer in 2010 from Atletico Madrid. Maxi was a cult hero on the Kop with the as the Argentine was brilliant during the 2010/11 season, ending up with 10 goals in 28 league appearances after signing on a free transfer in 2010.

Shining on the same post Mo Salah is currently serving as the most expensive player in Liverpool 2022, manager showed great faith in the Argentinian by starting him in 13 fixtures between 6 February and 2 May 2010. In the World Cup in South Africa Maxi made four starts and one substitute appearance as the double World champions reached the quarter-finals. Rafa was soon on his way out of Anfield and Maxi was used sparingly by Roy Hodgson. Thankfully the Englishman's reign was short and the Argentinian was more of a regular under Kenny Dalglish. Maxi came to prominence towards the end of the 2010/11 season with a flurry of goals, scoring seven times in three successive Premier League matches including hat-tricks against Birmingham City and Fulham. He made twice as many first-team appearances as he did in 2009/10. Ten goals in 35 matches showed Maxi's ability to arrive in the nick of time from midfield to finish off a well-worked attack. Even though Maxi only appeared in just over 40% of Liverpool's first-team matches in 2011/12, he again proved that he had an eye for a goal, scoring twice in away matches at Chelsea in the League and the League Cup in November and then scoring twice at Blackburn towards the end of the season, a total of six goals in 17 starts.

9. Martin Skrtel

Next in our list of the

top 10 Liverpool January signings in history

is the former Liverpool Slovakian veteran, Martin Skrtel. Skrtel was signed by Liverpool on 11 January 2008 from Zenit for a fee of £6.5m, this made Skrtel the most expensive defender in Liverpool's history, surpassing the £6m spent on Daniel Agger two years prior, becoming one of the Liverpool most expensive transfers in his time.

Although Skrtel had already established himself as one of Liverpool's key defenders in the previous seasons, the 2010-11 season was in many ways a breakthrough campaign for him. In this season, Skrtel fully established himself as a leading player for the side as he played every minute of all 38 of Liverpool's League games. Skrtel was one of only two outfield players in the Premier League to achieve this feat, sharing with Leighton Baines.

Powerful centre-back Martin Skrtel gave eight-and-a-half years of committed service in Liverpool's defense, making 320 appearances and lifting the 2012 League Cup during his time at Anfield. He missed only two Premier League fixtures in 2013-14 and weighed in with seven goals as the Reds were cruelly denied the championship by Manchester City on the final day of the season. Tougher times followed, with Rodgers' charges unable to reproduce those exploits again as he gave way to Jürgen Klopp in October 2015 and Martin again found that his place in the team was not guaranteed.

There were still memorable moments on a personal level, including a thunderous volley to cap off a 4-1 rout of Manchester City in the German's initial weeks at the helm. But at the end of the season, Skrtel's lengthy spell with the Reds came to an end as he agreed on a permanent switch to Turkish side Fenerbache.

8. Fernando Morientes

Next in our list of the top 10 Liverpool January signings in history,

Fernando Morientes

was a well-known soccer player. His birthday is April 5th, 1976, and he was born in Spain. Fernando is a Spanish forward who played for Real Madrid from 1997 to 2005, winning three UEFA Champions League championships with the club before moving on to Monaco, Liverpool, Valencia, and Marseille.

Certainly a player that if he was playing right now Jurgen Klopp would definitely add to the

list of Liverpool new signing

this season, Fernando Morientes joined Liverpool from Real Madrid for an £8.33m fee in 2005 after making a total of 182 league appearances for Real, scoring 82 goals.

Morientes made his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on 15 January 2005, starting in a 0–1 home defeat to the rivals – his play was described as "quiet" by BBC Sport. On 1 February, he scored his first goal for the club, equalizing with a 20-yard shot in a 2–1 victory over Charlton Athletic, and four days later, he scored his first goal at Anfield, opening a 3–1 victory over Fulham after nine minutes. He was cup-tied for the Champions League season and did not play in the competition's final win over Milan.

Morientes scored 12 goals in 60 games, securing the 2005 UEFA Super Cup and appearing in the 2005 Football League Cup Final and the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship Final on the losing side.

7. Javier Mascherano

  • Year of the signature:

Next is the former Barcelona and Argentina icon,

Javier Mascherano

, who was a part of Liverpool’s most solid midfield lines in their history alongside Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso.

After joining Corinthians in the mid-season, he played in only 9 matches followed by a long injury spell but still, the team was capable to win the 2005 Série A championship. He totally appeared 33 times for the club before moving to English Club West Ham United for £13.14 m.

He played 7 matches and after a dispute with Liverpool, West Ham was compelled to let him go on free in February 2007 as a special request was made by Liverpool to bring him to Anfield. His indispensable role made them reach the Champions League Final that season, although at the end of the day they lost 2-1 to AC Milan. While Mascherano had his own song, he had a special place in the fans' affection at Liverpool.

He received a red card for an unnecessary lunge at United's van der Sar at Anfield in October and got another red against Portsmouth just before Christmas. It wasn't surprising that he was ranked #1 on the disciplinary list in the 2009/10 Premier League season with nine yellows and two reds. A highlight was a fierce drive in the Goodison derby that deflected off Yobo and into the Gladwys Street goal. Mascherano's run and dive in front of the away supporters showed his player's passion and enthusiasm and his pride in wearing a Liverpool shirt.

The unavoidable happened on the penultimate day of the summer transfer window in 2010 when Mascherano signed a four-year deal with Barcelona. Since his departure, Liverpool suffered badly from not finding a replacement for the Argentine for years, until they signed the highly-rated Brazilian Fabinho from Monaco, who currently is among the

most expensive player in Liverpool 2022

.

6. Luis Diaz

  • Post:

     Winger

  • Nationality:

    Colombia

  • Year of the signature:

     2022

At the end of Liverpool's January transfer window of 2022, Liverpool signed Porto striker,

Luis Diaz

on a 5-year deal. Followed by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s absence for the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool’s need to buy a striker couldn't be any more urgent. Diaz is probably the best fit for Klopp’s team so they signed him without any more hesitation.

Liverpool was not a busy club this Premier League transfer window of January 2022 as is their habit. Jurgen Klopp seems to have constructed the perfect team containing 17 or 18 quality players who could all be selected to start a game. So their transfer strategy veers toward bringing in quality rather quantity and squad players and the transfer of Luis Diaz from Porto to Liverpool exactly aligns with that strategy.

The Colombian winger who started his career in the second tier of Colombian football and then after moving to Europe gained prominence in Porto, has been brilliant this season and has dominated the Primeira Liga. So, it was only natural that so many clubs were after him in January. As the contract situation for Salah, Mane, and Firmino is venturing more into uncertainty, it is a smart move for Liverpool to move for players like Diaz who is still quite young and can become starters at the club if any of those three decides to leave.

Diaz managed to score 14 goals and record 4 assists in the first half of the season for Porto, improving his own record from the last two seasons and showing he is in fact a winger that has a lot of goals in him. In fact, he has already scored for Liverpool in 2 appearances he has made for the club but he has a long way to go to justify his £37.5 million price tag that could go as high as £50 million with add-ons. Whether he succeeds at Liverpool or not, there is no doubt that this deal was one of Premier League's biggest January of 2022 transfers.

The Colombian winger was in great form during his third season at Porto. He had a good summer with Colombia's national team in the 2021 Copa America. Diaz ended up as the joint top goalscorer of the tournament alongside Lionel Messi. In 2019, he joined Porto for a reported fee of €7 million. Diaz won the domestic treble at Porto including Primeira League, Taça de Portugal, and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. In his total of 125 appearances, Diaz scored 41 goals for the Portuguese side. Liverpool signed the 25 years old for a €45 million initial fee making him the 5th most expensive arrival for the Reds. There’s also a potential of €15 million add-ons in the deal.

5. Daniel Agger

  • Nationality:

    Denmark

  • Year of the signature:

      2006

Beginning and ending his career with Danish club

Brondby

, Agger spent eight years at Liverpool, making 232 appearances and winning the League Cup in 2012. However, a series of unfortunate injuries forced him to cut his career short. In addition to his career with the Reds, Agger won 75 caps for Denmark and captained them at the European Championship in 2012.

Composed in possession, an assuring presence in any backline, and with the natural power and athleticism to contain opposition forwards, the Dane was a perfect fit for English and Premier League football. After beginning his career with Brondby in the Danish Superliga, Agger caught the attention of Europe's top clubs and it was the Reds who succeeded in the race for his signature, which was sealed in January 2006. The classy left-footer made his Liverpool debut against Birmingham on February 1, though injury meant his first few months on Merseyside were spent largely on the sidelines.

However, the 2006-07 campaign saw Agger force his way into the starting XI, and he even won PFA Player of the Month for September. A 35-yard belter against West Ham did his kudos no harm, with the strike winning the club's Goal of the Season prize.

Back in domestic football, the Dane collected a medal with Liverpool in 2011-12. Much to the delight of the Kop, the campaign saw him become an almost permanent fixture on the teamsheet as he formed a strong partnership with Martin Skrtel and helped the club lift the Carling Cup. With Brendan Rodgers installed as manager, Agger then committed his long-term future to Anfield by signing a new deal in October 2012. Four months later, the defender reached 200 appearances for the Reds when he featured against Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League. The good times continued when the boss appointed his No.5 vice-captain in August 2013 and the centre-back was involved in 20 matches as Liverpool so nearly scooped the Premier League title, ultimately finishing second. Agger notched in front of the Kop on the last day of the campaign, in what would prove to be his final Anfield appearance. For, as the summer transfer window neared a conclusion, it was announced that he had completed a return to his former club, Brondby, after 232 games for Liverpool.

4. Daniel Sturridge

Born on September 1, 1989, in Birmingham,

Daniel Sturridge

is the next entry in our list of the

top 10 Liverpool January signings in history.

Sturridge was transferred to Liverpool FC on January 2, 2013, for a fee estimated at £12m. On January 6, Sturridge debuted for Liverpool against Mansfield Town in the third round of the FA Cup. Sturridge opened the scoring for the Reds after seven minutes of play.

The following weekend, he scored in his first league game as a substitute in a 2-1 loss to Manchester United. In his first Premier League start, Sturridge scored his third goal for Liverpool and his first home game, a 5-0 win over Norwich City at Anfield on January 19, scoring in his first three games, becoming the first player since Ray Kennedy in 1974 to do so.

Sturridge scored a 20-yard goal in a 2-2 draw with his parent club Manchester City on February 3. He followed that up on February 17 with an assist for teammate Jose Enrique and a penalty in a 5-0 win over Swansea City. He also netted in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea. Sturridge scored twice and provided an assist in a 6-0 win over Newcastle United in April.

He scored the first hat-trick of his career on May 12 against Fulham (3-1 win). The Reds finished this season seventh in the table. He scored his first goal of the new Premier League season on 17 August 2013 in the 1-0 home win over Stoke City with a fine diagonal left-footed shot from outside the box. He did it again a week later, scoring the decisive goal in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Aston Villa. On the 1st of September, in the English derby against Manchester United, he scored the winning goal in the 1-0 final, which brought the Reds to the top of the table with 9 points.

He was forced to sit out for two months in December after suffering an ankle injury. Following the injury, he came back in better shape than before and went on to score for 7 consecutive matches. He completed the season with 33 appearances and 25 goals in total, contributing to helping his team finish second in the league behind Manchester City. His partnership with Suarez, soon nicknamed SAS (Sturridge and Suarez), turned out to be one of the most prolific in European soccer that year, earning praise from media and fans alike.

Sturridge signed for Turkish club Trabzonspor on August 21, 2019, after 6 years at the club, making a total of 160 appearances for the Reds, scoring 68 goals and providing 26 assists.

3. Philippe Coutinho

  • Year of the signature:

     2013

Lacking game time at Inter Milan, Coutinho joined Liverpool FC on 30 January 2013 for a fee of around €10 million. He scored on his first start on 17 February 2013 with an assist from Luis Suarez against Swansea. Two weeks later, he was back in the starting line-up for a trip to Wigan. He provided the assists for his team's first two goals. Following a very good start with his new club, he was voted player of the month by the Liverpool fans.

In an interview,

Coutinho

said he was happy with his English debut: "I'm learning all the time. I'm still young and I still have so much to learn. I hope to be here for years and become a great Liverpool player. I will continue to work hard and do my best to improve my performance". In the last game of the season against Queens Park Rangers, he scored the only goal of the game.

The 2013-2014 season saw Coutinho put in a string of fine performances. Forming a formidable attack with Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling, and Luis Suarez, they carried Liverpool throughout the season. Liverpool dominated the Premier League and was in with a shout of winning the title. But in the last three games of the season, Liverpool lost to Chelsea and then drew with Crystal Palace.

They finished second in the league, two points behind Manchester City. He ended the season with five goals and seven assists in the league. However, his good performances were not enough to take part in the World Cup in his country.

Coutinho had another good pre-season, but it was difficult to confirm the hopes placed in him at the start of the 2014-2015 season. However, this has not prevented the club's directors, aware of his great potential, from offering him a contract extension. Coutinho's form in the early part of the season was not as good as it had been last season, and the 3-4-3 formation Brendan Rodgers had introduced enabled the team to win several matches.

Coutinho was appointed captain and scored his first hat-trick for Liverpool against Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on 6 December (7-0). In December, he scored four goals and provided as many assists.

He even received the captain's armband twice from Klopp. Nevertheless, the rumors of his move to Barcelona did not die down and there was some unease between the player and the club, with the situation unclear. Coutinho finally left Liverpool in the winter break. He ended five years with the Reds, scoring 54 goals in 201 games before making another controversial January transfer to Barcelona.

Suarez's best season at Liverpool individually was the 2013-14 season in which the footballer scored 31 goals in 33 matches, becoming Premier League's top scorer. He also won the Premier League Golden Boot and European Golden Shoe, along with Cristiano Ronaldo. During that season, he formed a deadly partnership with Daniel Sturridge; the duo scored 52 goals between them.

The Gunfighter won one Football League Cup, scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances that he made for the Reds. On 11 July 2014, the Uruguayan striker signed a five-year deal with Barcelona for €82.3 million, becoming one of the most expensive players in football history.

Virgil van Dijk

joined Liverpool from Southampton on 1 January 2018, becoming the most expensive defender in the history of football. The transfer sum was £75 million and the contract was signed for 5 years. On 5 January, in his first-ever match for Liverpool against Everton in the 1/32 of the FA Cup final, he scored the winning goal in the 84th minute of the match. The encounter ended 2-1 in favor of the Reds and the defender won the hearts of the team's fans from the first match. The club was quick to include him in their entry to all competitions.
