When little Suarez was nine years old experienced the unpleasant event of his parents divorcing, leading him to choose street sweeper as a job because of helping his mother. While he played at Urreta FC, Suarez was noticed by Wilson Pirez, the Nacional youth team's scout.

Suarez did not have good friends as a teenager, so he did not focus enough on football and began drinking. He admitted that at the time, he became a rebel. "From 12-14, I went through a phase in which the football was not going well for me, and I did not want to study. I didn’t like to train. I only liked playing the games, and that way it was going to be very difficult for me to achieve something. I got really angry. I was a rebel, and that worked against me," said Suarez.

Fortunately, Suarez was rescued by Wilson Pirez by offering him to play at the club. Suarez accepted the offer because of helping his family, as well as getting a football boot. Later Suarez said, “I thought about my family, my brothers, and resolved that I’ll be able to help them if I go far in football, I have to get on with it, I also looked at some team-mates, who turned up to training in boots, and thought; ‘If you want those boots, you’ve got to train.'”

When he was 14 years old, he joined Nacional's youth team, but two years later, after the referee showed him a red card, he headbutted the referee. After his immoral behavior, one night, he got drunk; his coach warned him that he would be fired if he did not take football seriously. Finally, in May 2018, Suarez made his debut officially against Atletico Junior, and in September 2005, the Gunfighter scored his first goal, helping the team win the 2005–06 Uruguayan league.
