Athletic activates Ander Herrera's purchase option from PSG

After joining his boyhood club Athletic on an initial loan from PSG last summer, Herrera made 11 appearances for Los Leones. Now, both of the clubs confirm that Herrera's move to Athletic has become permanent.

Ander Herrera joined Paris Saint-Germain from Manchester United as a free agent in 2019 and made 95 appearances for the club, winning Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, and Trophee des Champions with Les Parisians as well as lifting the Coupe de la Ligue.

However, the Spaniard failed to establish himself as a regular for PSG as he headed his boyhood club, Athletic Bilbao on a loan deal last summer.

Before his move to Man United, the 33-year-old spent three years at Athletic and now, the club opted to trigger his buy-option with the deal going through prior to the January transfer deadline. He signed a new contract with the La Liga side until the end of the 2023-24 season.

Herrera first joined Athletic from Real Zaragoza in 2011. He scored 11 times in 128 matches at Athletic and helped them reach the Europa League and Copa final in 2011/12.

The 33-year-old Herrera joined Manchester United in 2014 and won the League Cup, the FA Cup, and the Europa League.
