but he lost his place in the team and has started the last four matches on the bench.

Inter striker has not scored for Argentina at this tournament but scored the winning penalty in the quarter-final shoot-out with the Netherlands.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bertoni said Lautaro Martinez showed his strong character with the penalty at World Cup.

“That penalty weighed so much, and he showed character. He is a born goal scorer, he lives on goals. Sometimes the ball doesn’t go in but then when he pops the cap everything comes by itself."

Argentina will face Croatia in the first semi-final on Tuesday.

Bertoni who was part of the Argentina squad that won the 1978 World Cup also said he is happy that people compare Julian Alvarez with him.

“I hope that will be the case this time as well. He will be useful even though Julian Alvarez’s presence is important for the way the team plays.

“Someone said that because of the way he moves he is the ‘Bertoni of 2022’, I like the definition.”

The 25-year-old Martinez has scored eight goals and provided six assists in 21 matches across all competitions this season.
