Embolo sinks the spirited Cameroon as Switzerland get their first win

Breel Embolo scores against the country of his birth to make it 8 straight losses for Cameroon in the World Cup

Switzerland started their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win against Cameroon at Al Janoub Stadium. Breel Embolo was the hero for Switzerland as the on-form Monaco striker scored against his home country of Cameroon and condemn them to their eighth consecutive loss at the World Cup.

Despite the result, it was Cameroon that were the better team in the first half as they posed a constant threat but it was once again Yann Sommer who came to Switzerland’s aid. The Gladbach goalie has a habit of performing well in tournaments as he did in Euro 2020.

Switzerland

made a couple of attempts at the first half but the two teams went into the break on level terms. However, the Swiss surprised Cameroon against the run of play and Breel Embolo managed to score in the 48th minute, after which he refused to celebrate.

The goal seemed to deflate

Cameroon

’s resolve as the Indomitable Lions seemed less and less like a threat with the game carrying on. Seferovic had a serious chance late in the game and could’ve made it 2-0 but a last-ditch save by Castelletto prevented it.

With Serbia and Brazil as the other teams in Group G, it was vital for Switzerland to get the win if they wanted to have any chance of qualifying. A hard test awaits Yakin’s men as they will face Brazil next but their last game against known-rivals Serbia will prove vital in who qualifies from this group.

Cameroon next faces Serbia on Monday and will be hoping to end their miserable run of defeats as Switzerland faces Brazil.
