Brighton's Mwepu forced to retire after serious heart problem

After recent medical tests, the Zambian midfielder found out that he has a serious heart problem and cannot continue playing football.

Brighton have confirmed that Enock Mwepu, the team's young star, has been forced to retire from football due to a heart problem.

Mwepu moved from Red Bull Salzburg to Brighton in the summer of 2021 and played 27 games for the team and scored three goals.

The player was on a flight to join the Zambia national team camp during the break of the last national matches, when he realized that he was not feeling well and was hospitalized before returning to Brighton.

After his return, he was closely monitored by Brighton's medical team and many tests were performed on him to determine that he has a serious heart problem and it is very difficult to continue his presence in the football field.

His statement reads:

"A small boy from a Zambian township called Chambishi has some news to share. He stood strong to follow his dream of playing football at the highest level and by the grace of God he lived his dream by reaching the Premier League.

"Some dreams however come to an end, so it is with sadness that I announce the need to hang up by boots because of the medical advice I have received. This is not the end of my involvement in football, I plan to stay involved in some capacity."

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi said:

"I am so sorry for Enock. Before I arrived I looked at all the squad, and he was a player I was so excited and looking forward to working with. We will do everything we can to help him."
