final to France.

At no stage in the first half did Spain appear likely to cancel

Manuel Akanji

's first goal, despite having significant possession of the ball. Jordi Alba's equalizer was inspired by Marco Asensio early in the second half, but an Eric Garcia own goal almost immediately put them back on the back foot, and a second equalizer never materialized.

Despite possessing the ball, Spain struggled to create chances and fell down in the 21st minute when Akanji headed Ruben Vargas' corner into the upper-right corner. After the winger's penetrating move, Unai Simon was called upon to save Xherdan Shaqiri's near-post strike just before the interval.

The equalizer was scored by Alba after Asensio released him at the conclusion of a spectacular solo run 55 minutes after Spain's first accurate attempt. However, the visitors swiftly regained the advantage, with Garcia putting the ball into his net after Akanji flicking on another Vargas corner.

La Roja spent most of the final 30 minutes camped in Switzerland's half, but Yann Sommer thwarted Carlos Soler's great opportunity to secure victory in stoppage time.
