Aspas keeps his World Cup hopes despite admitting Enrique's snub hurts

Despite not being included in Spain's last call-up before the World Cup, the 35-year-old Aspas stays optimistic about playing for his country this November in Qatar.

Iago Aspas

established himself as one of the best La Liga strikers as well as one of Celta’s best-ever strikers by scoring 189 goals in 424 appearances for the club. However,

Spain

’s boss

Luis Enrique

opted to not include the 35-year-old striker, who has scored six goals from 19 caps for Spain, in his latest squad for the Nations League, which is their latest squad before the Upcoming November

2022 World Cup

.

Although

Aspas

admits “it hurts” to not be included in the squad, he’s still hopeful to taste World Cup before retirement. He told

the Cadena Ser:

<em>

"Hope is the last thing you lose, but it is true that I haven't gone [with the national team] for a while.

"I finished last season quite well and now I have continuity in the league. Of course, it hurts not to go, I'm stubborn and I'm not going to give up until the end. If I get on the final list, all the better.

“They pay me to play for Celta, but I have that prize just around the corner and I'll do everything possible. If not, he would have told me because the coach is up front."

Scoring 23 goals and contributing 7 assists in 43 La Liga games, Iago Aspas is in the lifetime form of his career, a record only beaten by Real Madrid’s

Karim Benzema

.

Representing

Celta

as a ball boy when he was younger, he left Celta for Liverpool in 2013 for a reported €10.80m fee before returning to his boyhood club in 2015 for a €5.30m fee after an unsuccessful two-year spell with Liverpool, spending the second season on loan at Sevilla.
