Napoli’s Sporting director Giuntoli reveals why didn't sign Ronaldo

Although Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Sporting CP, and Napoli were all linked with a move for Manchester United's forward, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to secure a move away from the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo

filed a transfer request to seal a move away from

Manchester United

early in the summer, pushing for a move to gain Champions League game time in the final years of his career. Such a move didn’t materialize.

Napoli'

s sporting director

Cristiano Giuntoli

reveals the

Serie A

side wanted to invest in a young team as they opted not to pursue the 37-year-old striker in the recent transfer window.

Cristiano Giuntoli said on Friday: "

During the transfer market we pretend to chat with everyone, and sometimes we do it for real. But we wanted to invest in a young team.”

Napoli

failed to sign

Paris Saint-Germain

's

Keylor Navas

after they sold their star midfielder

Fabian Ruiz

to the Ligue 1 giants. Giuntoli added:

"PSG were interested in Fabian, whom we had to sell, we could bring a high-level goalkeeper to Naples to work alongside [Alex] Meret. In the end, the operation was closed.

"They did not find an agreement on the salary with the player and we knew we had a binding ceiling that we do not breach for anyone."

“We trust Meret. We are happy that he stayed and against Liverpool he had a great game. Enduring the pressure of the summer did him good."

Napoli started their Champions League campaign in great fashion hammering

Liverpool

4-0 at home. They will face

Spezia

on Saturday for their next Serie A match.
