Erling Haaland's father reveals the rejected Real Madrid offer

The Citizens beat the Champions League winners to sign Erling Haaland for a reported £51 million deal from Dortmund this summer, and the Norwegian fast-tracked his career at City scoring nine goals in his first five Premier League appearances.

Nordic media group

Viaplay

signed up

Erling Haaland

to an exclusive, multi-market partnership that will see the

Manchester City

star in Viaplay content and become the group’s media ambassador. In an exclusive documentary named '

Haaland: The Choice'

, Erling Haaland's father,

Alfie

, revealed why his son followed his footpath to play for Man City despite a rocket offer from

Real Madrid

.

Haaland Senior explained:

"We had established a first criterion which was: ‘Who needs a number nine?’ Manchester City had 10/10 at this level, it was the perfect option.

"Real, we gave him more of a five or a six out of 10 because there is the way Karim Benzema currently plays. And we wondered if they were also going to sign [Kylian] Mbappe."

The documentary '

Haaland: The Choice

' is an exclusive documentary for the Scandinavian pay-TV group that the company promises will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the 22-year-old’s meteoric career in

Molde

, Red Bull Salzburg, and

Borussia Dortmund

.

All my life I’ve watched and supported English football. To be able now to play in the Premier League is a dream come true,”

said

Erling Haaland

in a statement.

“Joining up with Premier League rightsholders Viaplay in an ambassador role is something I look forward to. I’m sure we’ll have many fun years together.”
