UK government opposed extra bank holiday if England win Euro 2022

England could win their first major trophy on Sunday.

The UK government has ruled out extending bank holidays if

England

wins against

Germany

in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.

The Lionesses are just one win away from winning their first ever major trophy when they face Germany at Wembley on Sunday. Their rivals have conceded just one goal en route to the final, defeating mighty

France

in the semi-finals. Expectations from England have risen and they have broken the record of spectators in the Euro Women's competition. Keir Strummer, the leader of the opposition, asked the government to add a day to the bank holiday if Sarina Wiegman's side wins the final, but the government opposed this request.

A government spokesperson said:

"The Lionesses have done England proud with their fantastic run to the Euro 2022 final.

"The whole country will be roaring them on and hopefully watching a famous victory against Germany on Sunday evening. We will certainly be celebrating their success.

"However, the current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and while an additional bank holiday may benefit some communities and sectors, the cost to the economy of an additional bank holiday is considerable."
