Erling Haaland will wear the No 9 shirt at Manchester City

Erling Haaland is the same as number nine, so Manchester City's announcement on Saturday seemed like it was bound to happen.

On Saturday, it was announced that

Erling Haaland

will be

Manchester City

's new number nine. He will replace

Gabriel Jesus

, who left the team to join

Arsenal

.

The new player from

Borussia Dortmund

was already expected to lead City's attack in the new season, and now he has the number that goes with that responsibility. Haaland, who will be 22 on July 21, has joined a City team that won the Premier League title by one point over Liverpool on the last day of the season.

There was a good reason why people were so excited about his arrival. During his two and a half years at Dortmund, the Norwegian scored 86 goals in 89 games. Only

Robert Lewandowski

(123 goals in 108 games) and Kylian Mbappe (93 goals in 111 games) from Europe's top five leagues scored more goals in that time.

Haaland scored 29 goals in 30 games in all competitions last season, which is one goal every 3.6 shots. He also scored on 65.8% of his big chances.

City won the Premier League and made it to the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the Champions League last season. They did this by playing most of the season with a "false nine" attacker instead of Haaland, who is a true center forward.

Haaland will officially become a City player on Sunday, when the club hosts an event with him and other new players like Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez, both of whom used to play for Leeds United and River Plate, respectively.
