Former Napoli star Mertens in talks with Olympique Marseille

Former Napoli striker Dries Mertens is in negotiations with Olympique Marseille.

French outlet Foot Mercato claims that

’ agent is currently in Marseille to talk about a transfer to

Olympique Marseille

. The Belgian striker wants a contract worth €2.5m net per season.

Mertens’s contract with

Napoli

expired recently and he is a free agent. He also has been linked with Lazio in recent weeks.

The 35-year-old wanted to stay at Napoli but their offer didn’t satisfy him and in the end, he decided to leave Napoli after nine years.

“I don’t know yet where I will play next season if it’s at Napoli or some other club,”

Mertens told HLN Sport while on international duty with Belgium last month.

“I hope to stay at Napoli, but I can’t say any more than that. Obviously, I hope to stay, but I haven’t received any offers, so we’ll have to see.”

Mertens joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 and since then scored 148 goals in 397 matches and is Napoli's outright all-time leading goalscorer. He won two Coppa Italia and one Supercoppa Italian with Napoli.

Last season, Mertens scored 13 goals and provided two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
