Wright-Phillips pens one-day contract to retire at New York Red Bulls

Bradley Wright-Phillips

has penned a one-day contact with

to end his career and call it quits with MLS outfit.

The former attacker is going to take up a new role in Harrison as Special Assistant to the Sporting Director, after being with

and

for two seasons.

After announcing that he will retire, the two-time Golden Boot winner has now penned with the side he contributed a hat-trick of Supporters' Shield triumphs over a seven-year spell.

"

It wouldn’t have felt right retiring somewhere else, especially in America, it wouldn’t have felt right,"

 Wright-Phillips said in a statement.

"I am honoured to get the opportunity to retire here, it means a lot to me."

Denis Hamlett, the sporting Director Wright-Phillips will link up with, also showed respect, adding:

"There was no question in our minds to bring Brad back to the club following his retirement.

"The expansive experience that Brad brings from the field will be helpful in the development with our young players, while at the same time, Brad getting crucial experience on the sporting side for his own professional development."

He made a name for himself when playing in MLS, making a move to the Red Bulls before the start of the 2013 season and helping them become regular contenders.

He has the record for the most goals with them (125), and became the Supporters’ Shields three times.
