Newcastle acquire Trippier’s services for £12m

The Premier League side have penned papers with Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier on a deal worth £12m, plus some add-ons.

Kieran Trippier

has put pen to paper with

Newcastle United

for a two-and-a-half-year deal that includes an option to extend for another year.

The England right-back went to Tyneside on a private jet on Wednesday after negotiations went well between the two sides on Tuesday.

The contract is worth £12m plus add-ons and the 31-year-old is the first signing after the new owners took over the club.

Atletico Madrid

were hoping Trippier would remain put, but the ex-

Tottenham

defender was keen on getting back to England.

Eddie Howe

, the Magpies boss, and the player had worked together when they were in Burnley, acquiring his services from Manchester City in 2012 following a remarkable loan spell at Turf Moor.

"

I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United, and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be,"

said Trippier.

The Saudi owners plan to acquire three more players this month as they aim to avoid relegation. They are currently sitting second bottom in the table.

Howe added:

"I am really pleased to welcome Kieran to Newcastle United. I have long admired his abilities and have followed his career, so when the opportunity arose to secure him, we didn't hesitate.

"A lot of hard work has gone into planning for the January transfer window long before the month began, which is clear in how quickly we have been able to complete this move."
