Zenga backs Insigne’s decision to join Toronto
The ex-Italy shot-stopper backed Lorenzo Insigne after he decided to make a move to Toronto FC and depart Napoli as a free agent.
Lorenzo Insigne
penned a four-year contract with the MLS side yesterday that includes an option to extend for another season.
His deal will see him earn €11.5m plus €4.5m add-ons and he is set to depart
Napoliwhen the season ends.
Napoli’s salary, on the other hand, was €3.5m, which is less than what he earns now, €5m a year.
However, former
Intergoalkeeper
Walter Zenga
supported the Napoli player’s decision to move to Canada only for the money.
“
I am an old school romantic, I believe he didn’t want to play against Napoli, that’s why he accepted the offer,”
Zenga told
Sky Sport Italia
.
“However, I challenge anyone to turn down an offer like the one that Lorenzo received.”
Insigne graduated from Napoli academy and player for them during his entire career except when he was on loan spells at Cavese, Foggia and Pescara.
The Italian player has met the back of the net 114 times in 145 games with the Partenopei, contributing to three trophies, one Italian Supercup and one Coppa Italia.
The Italy international’s deal with Napoli will end this season and he will move to
Torontoand the MLS side will announce his signing this week.
