Matthaus weighs in on Malen’s arrival at Dortmund

The Bayern Munich legend expects the Dutch forward to become a key player at Signal Iduna Park.

Following the

transfer of Jadon Sancho

to Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund signed

Donyell Malen

from PSV earlier this month. The 22-year-old, who delivered impressive performances for the Netherlands in their Euro 2020 campaign, is expected to play alongside Erling Haaland at the heart of Dortmund’s attacking line.

Lothar Matthaus

believes the Dutchman can become a key figure in Marco Rose’s squad for the next season.

"He's an important player,”

Matthaus told

Bundesliga.com

.

“A fast player in Sancho's old position. He can come from both sides.”

Malen featured in 32 Eredivisie games for PSV last season, scoring 19 goals and providing 8 assists. The Dutch forward made his debut for Dortmund in their DFB Pokal match against Wehen Wiesbaden last week.

Matthaus added:

“Now they can try to integrate those players that were hindered by Sancho into the team, players such as [Thorgan] Hazard, who came from Gladbach two years ago. Julian Brandt is similar,

"They could explode at some stage and with Malen, they have a player who has shown what he is capable of at Eindhoven. He's dangerous in front of goal, he can assist well, he has pace. That's why Dortmund are definitely a team for the Champions League spots, and maybe more if everything goes to plan."

Dortmund will play their first Bundesliga match of the new season against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
