Steve Bruce gives Joe Willock transfer update

The Newcastle boss says his side are still “badgering” away in their bid to bring the Arsenal midfielder back on loan.

Newcastle

started their pre-season campaign with a defeat against

York City

on Sunday. Steve Bruce’s side lost to a late goal from Michael Duckworth, while their forward Joelinton hobbled off the pitch with an injury. In a post-match interview, Bruce confirmed the transfer of

Florian Lejeune

to Alaves.

“Florian is on his way to Spain. It looks as if something is going to happen there."

Bruce told a press conference.

“It will put a few quid in the coffers. He is going back to Alaves where he was on loan and there is something imminent.”

The Newcastle boss also confirmed the veteran striker Andy Carroll won’t get a contract renewal.

“He’s out of contract. I had a conversation with Andy I think he wants to go and play. I wish the lad all the best.”

Bruce added.

Asked about the club’s efforts to sign Arsenal’s

Joe Willock

, Bruce responded:

“As I’ve said, it’s really Arsenal’s decision, and until Arsenal make a decision – a bit like all the big clubs, they have a look over pre-season – we’ll keep monitoring and badgering away. We’d love to do something but it’s still Arsenal’s call.”

Willock joined Newcastle on a loan deal in February but returned to Arsenal at the end of the season. The 21-year-old featured in 14 matches for the Magpies, scoring eight goals. Newcastle are keen to secure another loan deal for Willock, but Arsenal are yet to decide whether they can afford to let the midfielder spend another loan spell.
