Lugano claims that Uruguay could have won two World Cups with Messi

Uruguay former star has talked about their possible trophies if they had Messi with them.

Uruguay’s

former star and captain,

Diego Lugano

has claimed, that his national team could have won World Cup 2010 and 2014 if the Argentinian superstar,

Lionel Messi

, was playing for Uruguay.

Messi has failed to win the World cup for his country despite reaching the final in World Cup 2014 and helping his side reach the quarter-finals twice in his career.

"If Messi were playing for Uruguay in that 2010 World Cup, we would have won it,"

Lugano, who made 95 appearances for the Celeste, told students of the TEA Journalism School in Buenos Aires.

"And if Messi were Uruguayan in Brazil and Luis Suarez had not been kicked out, we would have won that too."

Lugano, who thinks that Messi would have won two World Cups if he had Uruguay’s committed and ambitious players as teammates, has taken part in both Brazil and South Africa World Cups and played as their captain in both campaigns.

Uruguay reached the semi-finals in the 2010 World Cup, where they were defeated by the Netherlands in a game that ended 3-2. Four years later, the Celeste advanced from a group that contained England and Italy, both of them being World Cup winners in the past, but they finished the group stage in second place, but they were eliminated again in the round of 16 against Colombia, being defeated 2-0 in Suarez’s absence.
