Red Star boss Stankovic sees playing against Milan as a win

Red Star Belgrade head coach Dejan Stankovic emphasized that playing against AC Milan is like they have already won.

The first leg of the

Europa League

face-off between the two sides finished 2-2 in Belgrade, with the equalizer scored after the Serbians had gone down to 10 men.

“There are 90 minutes to go, it feels like we already won and the reward is to play against a team and a club like Milan,” the 42-year-old Stankovic told Sky Sport Italia.

“We won’t say we’re beaten before we start. There’s a disadvantage due to the first leg result, we are playing at San Siro against talented players, but we’ll have our say.

“The fact Zlatan Ibrahimovic is on the bench is certainly an advantage for us tonight. Ibra is a leader, he makes the team tick and takes on responsibility. Having said that, Milan do have high level replacements.”

The Rossoneri had a hard time so far in 2021 and right now lost a greater number of games this year than all through 2020.

“Great clubs react in difficult moments,” added ex-Inter midfielder Stankovic.

“Nobody expected their poor performance against Spezia, but they will react. I just hope they react from the next match and not this one.”
