From 9 January to 6 February, the 33rd edition of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) took place in Cameroon. For the first time, the Lions of Teranga were crowned African champions. Senegal thereby became the 15th African nation to win the prestigious continental trophy. In doing so, Senegal assumed its status. The leading African nation in the Fifa ranking had to demonstrate a lot of courage, commitment and above all, patience to finally reach their goal. Their curse has been broken. Despite the talent of its players, Senegal was never an African champion.

While in the Senegal national team, the likes of Sadio Mane, Abdou Diallo, Edouard Mendy and others were the leading stars, but they also had some outstanding midfielders, who showed some great performances to lead their country to glory. The likes of Idrissa Gueye and Cheikhou Kouyaté are the best examples of this. Taking a look back at the tournament, we will reveal some of the top midfielders in the 2021

and

Cameroon

. His best performance was against Senegal in the final, where he received a rating of 6.8 from WhoScored with one 40 passes, 92.5 percent pass accuracy, one key pass and three tackles.

However, after the Port Said stadium disaster on 10 March 2012, the Egyptian Football Federation cancelled the competition, and Elneny, therefore, played his last match of the 2011/12 season on 28 January.

Fortunately, FC Basel invited Elneny to its training camp between 14 and 24 January 2013, where he was involved in a friendly against Romanian side Steaua Bucharest. He convinced coach Murat Yakin of his qualities and signed a contract on 29 January 2013, committing him to the Swiss side until June 2013.

He marked his debut in the Swiss league against

FC Sion

on 10 February 2013 (3-0 win). Thomas Partey – Ghana – Player Rating: 6.75

One of the good teams in the African national teams' rankings 2021, Ghana was undoubtedly one of the biggest disappointments of the 2021 African Cup of Nations, in which they had to say goodbye to the tournament with just two defeats and one draw. Nevertheless, Thomas Partey, the Arsenal star, was one of the good performers of his team, where he managed to provide two assists to his teammates in the second and third group stage matches against

Gabon

and Comoros, respectively.

Thomas was born in Odumas-Krobo, Ghana, and comes from the local FC Odometa. In 2011, he signed for Atletico Madrid and was included in the club's reserve squad. Thomas was summoned to the main squad for a match against

Having played in all four matches of the Ivory Coast, except for the Round of 16 match that he had to be replaced in the 30th minute due to injury, he showed some good performances, especially in the match against Algeria, in which he also scored a goal.

Franck Kessié began training at Stella Club d'Adjamé of Abidjan, playing as a central midfielder or defender. In early 2015, he was transferred to Atalanta BC. There he initially played in the youth team, but first-team coach Edoardo Reja appointed him for the away match of the 31st round of Serie A against

He was loaned to second-league Cesena for the 2015/16 season. He was retrained there permanently from a centre-back to a central midfielder. Kessié played 36 games in Serie B and scored four goals, while his club finished sixth in the table. During the summer of 2016, the Ivorian settled on a contract with Sunderland but was refused permission to work in England and remained in Italy. He was frequently compared to Chelsea FC's Ramires in terms of his playing style.
