Marcelo Bielsa set to take over Diego Alonso’s job at Uruguay

With Uruguay’s disappointing exit from the World Cup, manager Diego Alonso is set to be replaced and it seems the former Leeds and Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa is the main candidate.

Despite their 2-0 win against Ghana in the final day of group stage, Uruguay failed to qualify from their group as South Korea stunned Portugal, beating them with a 2-1 result, being qualified to the last-16 instead of Uruguay.

This has left the Uruguayan FA in search of a new manager and all evidence points to ‘El Loco’ or Marcelo Bielsa.

The former

Leeds United

boss, would be replacing Diego Alonso who himself has been La Celeste’s manager for less than a year after he took over the legendary Oscar Tabarez’s job.

It is now reported by TyC Sports that the Argentine Marcelo Bielsa will be signing a-year deal that ends after the 2026 World Cup in North America. Apart from his significant experience at the club level, Bielsa has close to a decade of international experience helming Argentina and

Chile

.

One of the legends of the game, particularly among managers, Bielsa would turn 71 by the end of this supposed contract with

Uruguay

should he even accept it. His resume shows that both at the club and international level, Bielsa excels at building strong foundations for teams which could prove vital for Uruguay as they embark on developing their next generation of stars.
