Ekitike admits he would join Newcastle United if it wasn't for PSG

The French striker has joined PSG on a loan deal until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy for €35 million. Newcastle United was also interested in signing him but Ekitike reportedly rejected their offer as he admits he would have joined the Magpies if it wasn’t for the Parisians.

Scoring 11 goals in 27 matches in all competitions for

Stade de Reims

, the 20-year-old star attracted the attention of many clubs in Europe, but finally, the league champion was able to finalize this transfer. Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle were also looking to sign him, and it is said that Newcastle came close to signing him in January, but in the end, the transfer was not finalized. However,

Hugo Ekitike

revealed how close he was to a switch to Saint-James Park.

"

I had an appointment with Luis [Campos, PSG sporting director] which meant a lot to me,”

Ekitike told

Le Parisien

.

"It was not so long ago. We talked a lot, he is someone I value a lot. I wanted to come to PSG before this exchange, but he convinced me even more.

"I’m not setting aside everything Newcastle did for me to come. If I had to go abroad, I would have gone there. But when PSG wants you and you're French, you can't refuse."

Eddie Howe's side

has failed to bring on board a major forward target despite making several signings ahead of the new season, including Matt Targett, Sven Botman, Nick Pope, and Charlie Mcarthur.
