Luka Modric quotes on his character and his childhood

Luka Modric was born on 9 September 1985 to his mother Radojka Modrić and his father Stipe Modrić in the city of Zadar located in Croatia.

Luka is the only son in his family as he also has two sisters called Jasmina Modrić and Diora Modrić both of whom are younger than him. Ever since Luka was just a kid around the age of six, the whole family had been struggling as their country had been involved in the war.

The situation was so rough that for a while the whole family had been living in a hotel despite the fact that both parents had been working at that time; as a matter of fact, Radojka used to be a textile worker while Stipe had been a military mechanic.

Nonetheless, even a disaster like war didn't stop Luka Modric from pursuing his dreams.

On his childhood

My childhood years were very painful. I was only 5 when the Croatian War of Independence broke out. I was living in a war zone and lost my grandfather in that war.

We were forced to live in refugee camp, passing my time by kicking a paper ball, even with danger always lurking nearby. As the war ended, I started playing football. My favorite club Hajduk FC rejected me by saying that I was too small, very lightweight- I wouldn't make it.

But my father said you can make it son, just believe. He didn't have money to send me to football schools and buy boots. I didn't stop and worked a hell lot on my playing style. I played for Croatia and signed for Tottenham, but they said he cannot play in England. I proved them wrong and performed and today I proudly say that I'm playing for the biggest club in the world- Real Madrid.

When the war started, we became refugees, and it was a really tough time. I was six years old. These were really hard times. I remember them vividly, but it's not something you want to remember or think about.

I had a nice childhood, even though I grew up in hotels.

We lived in a hotel for many years as we struggled financially, but I always loved football.

My father is strong in his legs, and I think I get that from him. I am stronger there than in my upper body, but that is what gives me a low centre of gravity. It makes it harder for opponents to get me off the ball.

My father fought for me to play football. He never had to make me shinpads, but it was a lot of money to send to me to a soccer school. And to provide boots and things.

On his character

I guess I'm just not that comfortable talking about myself.

I've seen a great deal of hardship in my life.

I believe that I've improved a lot as a player and a person, because being surrounded by great players on a daily basis helps your development out on the pitch.

The war made me stronger; it was a very hard time for me and my family. I don't want to drag that with me forever, but I don't want to forget about it, either.

I am very emotional.

I don't like to compare players, particularly to myself.

I have never doubted myself even if others did, I always believed I could get to where I am today and thank God this came true.

Luka Modric quotes on famous players and football clubs

For the last part of this article, let’s take a look at the top quotes by Andrea Pirlo about other football stars and teams, which include his comments on Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

On Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo

respects the fans - it's like a marriage. There are good days and bad days, but the important thing is that they love each other.

I have a good relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, and we'll have good relationship in the future, too.

For what Ronaldo's achieved, he's amazing; he's a great team-mate.

Cristiano? I don't think he's going to leave and I'd like him to stay because he's the best player in the world.

On Maradona

I have met him a few times. What can I say -

Maradona

is one of the best players in football history.

On Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan

is one of the best strikers in the modern generation.

On Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira

My favourite position is as midfielder, playing with

Xabi

and

Khedira

.

On Jose Mourinho

Mourinho

asks me to play as I did with Tottenham, but at a higher level.

On Mateo Kovacic

People in Real ask me about

Mateo Kovacic

all the time. He is a phenomenal talent and will play in some of the biggest clubs. Inter is a big club, no doubt, but Kovacic will play in even bigger.

On Carlo Ancelotti

I had great relationships with all the four coaches I played under at Real Madrid. They all helped me improve, but if I had to pick the best, I would pick

Ancelotti

.

On Nikica Jelavic

Jelavic improved massively going to the Premier League. He was great for Rangers, but Premier League is different: faster and more physical. He is perfect for the Premier League, has everything to succeed.

On Ivan Rakitic

I would say the best Croatian player in 2014 was

Ivan Rakitic

, leading Sevilla to Europa League glory and earning a big transfer to Barcelona.

On Real Madrid

We are Madrid, and we want to define our own philosophy. We don't want to be compared to anyone.

Madrid is a big and beautiful city with great parks where I like to walk. There are a lot of squares and museums, historic monuments. But I'm more a home guy; I feel most comfortable there with my wife and kids. We play, watch cartoons, like all families do.

I never considered leaving Real Madrid or that it was a mistake to come here.

I always said that I would like to finish my career in Madrid if it's possible.

All I dreamed of when I became a footballer was to play for a club as big as Real Madrid. It's maybe the most famous and best club in the history of football.

I think everybody respects Real Madrid; nobody wants to play against us.

All my future plans are related to Real Madrid, and there are no other clubs on my mind. I'm so happy here along with my family. Few players have ended their career here, Zidane being one of the exceptions. I'd like to be one of those players, too, but time will tell what the future holds.

It was my dream come true when I signed for Real Madrid. I want to stay here for as many years as possible and, if it's possible, finish my career here.

Fear doesn't exist in football, especially for Real Madrid.

Playing at Real Madrid is something special in itself, but winning trophies with Real Madrid is even more thrilling.

As Real Madrid is a team of stars, Bale would fit perfectly.

My challenge is to win titles and trophies with Real Madrid.

On Tottenham Hotspur

I can make my football dreams come true with Tottenham, and that is why all my thoughts and also my future is with this club.

Tottenham is the club that first gave me my opportunity to play in one of the strongest leagues in the world.

I want to thank all the people at Tottenham. I had four great years there, and I enjoyed every moment. I want to thank everyone who made my life enjoyable in London.
