Marcos Aoás Corrêa biography

Marquinhos early life

Though Marquinhos grew up in São Paulo, he had a popular cousin, Moreno Aoas Vidal, who was a budding star with the youth systems of Corinthians, the biggest soccer team in São Paulo at the time. It was the success of Moreno at Corinthians that encouraged Marquinhos and his older brother Luna to join the club's youth system when the former was just 8 years of age.

It would be interesting to remember that he was not always a defender for Marquinhos. The football genius began by switching between goalkeeping and working as a defender while training at Santa Teresinha Salesian College in São Paulo, before joining Corinthians in 2002.

As a goalkeeper, he was very fond of serving. He played as a defender, too, but he was always selected as the first choice for the job once he wanted to work as a goalkeeper. Adalberto de Oliveira Barbosa, the organizer of Sports and Dance activities at the academy, recalls.

Marquinhos profile

Marcos Aoás Corrêa, who hails from Brazil, is a professional footballer. Marquinhos, born on May 14th, 1994, is a midfielder who can play as a right-back as well. He currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.

At the age of eight, Marquinhos started his football career. He played in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A with the Corinthians. The teenager started to develop at a steady rate and won the 2012 Copa Libertadores for the Corinthians.

The defender made his full international debut against Honduras on November 16, 2013.

In the 71st minute, Marquinhos was inserted into the game and

Brazil

won the game 5-0. This was his only game that year for Brazil.

The 2015

Copa America

in Chile was his first major tournament. In the 2-1 victory over Venezuela, though, he got only one chance in the tournament.

Marquinhos is a talented athlete who has the potential to excel at the highest level and an experienced campaigner's attitude.

Marquinhos was named as one of the ten most talented young players in Europe by the British newspaper The Observer in January 2014.

On 19 July 2013, for a fee of EUR 31,4 million, Marquinhos concluded a five-year agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, the French side. That was the biggest change for a teenager at the time.

When he began playing for PSG, he netted quite a few goals. He scored in his UEFA Champions League debut against Olympiakos and Toulouse in his second Ligue 1 game.

Marquinhos was part of the victorious PSG side who, in the 13-14 season, scored a record 86 points.

For the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, Marquinhos did not have anything to do. Thus, the pair of Silva and Luiz were in great contact, giving Marcos minimal prospects. There was talk that in the following season the defender could leave the club.

But Luiz was sold back to Chelsea by new boss Unai Emery and Marquinhos got more chances after that.

Style of play

In terms of his playing style, Marquinhos is mainly used as a central defender but has also been used at the right-back and in a central or defensive midfield role. He is known for his anticipation, speed, and intellect, as well as his tactical talents, patience, ability to pass, ball elegance, and possession confidence, which helps him to break down attacks and then play the ball out or launch attacking play from the back.

Marquinhos described himself as a fast player when signing for Roma, with a strong tactical sense, who wins a lot of balls back, and who knows how to force himself on a game because of his ability to start attacking games from the back. As his role model, he appointed

Thiago Silva

.

Marquinhos told FourFourTwo in March 2015 that by honing his power and timing, characteristics he acquired from PSG assistant manager Claude Makélélé, he accounted for his average height for a defender. He thanked manager Laurent Blanc, himself a former defender, for supporting the defenders of the PSG to strike in set pieces and showing them the right positioning in this situation.

"a little phenomenon. He has the pace, the desire to lead, he knows what to do, he's humble. He is a little Thiago Silva"a little phenomenon. He's got speed, ability to head, he knows what to do, he's humble. He's a little Thiago Silva.

Marquinhos was named as one of the ten most talented young players in Europe by the British newspaper The Observer in January 2014. They wrote, He has the temperament to remain undaunted, the desire to excel, and could benefit from playing alongside his team-mate club, Thiago Silva, with whom at the wealthy Paris Saint-Germain he enjoys a solid understanding.

Reception

All things considering, defender Marcos Aoás Corrêa of Paris Saint-Germain, generally known as Marquinhos, is an exception. In his versatility, Marquinhos has continued to be world-class, intellectually sound within the football sense, despite remaining a low-profile player who remains as modest as the ball boy on the side of the pitch.

Marquinhos is, above all, a devout Christian who insists that religion is the most strong force in the world.

Goal celebration

Since he plays as a defender, Marquinhos is less in the scoring role, but he also has his own objective satisfaction.

A collective hug of the players with the scorer below on the pitch, or the players jumping on the back of each other

Marquinhos Career statistics

During his professional career, Marquinhos has featured for three teams already. We want to hear more about these 3 teams now.

Club

The first team he played in was his Corinthians and now we want to know about it.

Corinthians

At the age of eight, Marquinhos joined the Corinthian culture in 2002. Since securing the State junior cup, he was first named in a senior matchday squad on 29 January 2012, remaining an unused substitute in their 1-0 home victory over Linense in the Campeonato Paulista.

On 18 February, he made his professional competition debut, playing the full 90 minutes of the victory in São Caetano with the same result. During the season, he made eight appearances as Timão topped the table in the regular season, but in the quarter-finals of the play-offs, Ponte Preta was beaten.

On 20 May 2012, after the state championship, Marquinhos made his Campeonato Brasileiro Série A debut, playing the entire 90 minutes in a 0-1 loss to Fluminense at the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Stadium; both teams rested players because in the first game of the season they focused on the Copa Libertadores.

He played six games in the national championship and was an unused replacement when the team won the 2012 Copa Libertadores final over

Boca Juniors

.

Roma

Marquinhos was signed by the Italian club

Roma

from Corinthians in July 2012. Initially, the transfer was a one-year loan for a fee of EUR 1,5 million, rising to EUR 3 million after eight first-team appearances of at least 45 minutes each. At Roma, to avoid confusion with teammate Marquinho, he played under the name 'Marcos' printed on his shirt.

On 16 September, Marquinhos played his first game in a 2-3 defeat to Bologna at Stadio Olimpico, sent by manager Zdeněk Zeman to substitute Iván Piris for the final 15 minutes of the game.

By October, alongside former Corinthian teammate and fellow Brazilian Leandro Castán in central defense, Zeman agreed to partner Marquinhos for his speed, demoting former starter Nicolás Burdisso to the substitutes' bench. In a 4-2 victory over Milan on 22 December, he gave a straight red card when he was judged to have denied a straightforward goalscoring chance to Stephan El Shaarawy. In his only season, Marquinhos played 26 games in

Serie A

, and four in the Coppa Italia.

This included the entire 90 minutes of the May 26 final, playing at right-back as Roma lost 0-1 to Rome's Lazio rivals.

Paris Saint-Germain

On 19 July 2013, for a fee of EUR 31,4 million, Marquinhos concluded a five-year agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, the French side. This was also the highest transfer fee for a teenager, according to BBC Sport, while Sky Sports listed it as the fifth-highest such transfer then, and France's Le 10 Sport recorded it as the third-highest.

After those of Rio Ferdinand, Thiago Silva, Lilian Thuram, and Dani Alves, French news channel BFM TV described the move as the fifth most costly of all time for a defender. The relocation of Marquinhos was threatened by irregularities in his medical test, and he missed a pre-season visit to Sweden by the team. His mother claimed he had contracted an infection, with PSG denying he had hepatitis reports spread by Le Parisien.

Marquinhos scored his first career goal on his official debut for the club on 17 September to confirm a 4-1 victory over Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium in the 2013-14 UEFA

Champions League

group stage.

Five days later, in a 1–1 draw against Monaco, Marquinhos made his Ligue 1 debut as a starter. On 28 September, his first league goal for the club came, the first in a 2-0 victory over

Toulouse

. On 2 October, in a 3-0 Champions League group win over Benfica, he scored the second goal. At the start of his PSG career, Marquinhos, who was playing because of Thiago Silva's injury, expressed disappointment at his goalscoring form.

In the last 16 of the Champions League on 12 March 2014, Marquinhos scored the last goal of PSG's 6-1 aggregate victory over Bayer Leverkusen and was an unused replacement when they won the Coupe de la Ligue final against Lyon on 19 April. On 10 May, he scored the opening goal of a 3-1 win over Lille, bringing by-then league champions PSG to a total of 86 career league points with a game left to play.

International

In the 2011 South American Under-17 Football Championship, Marquinhos played every minute of Brazil's campaign, as they won and qualified in that category for that year's

World Cup

.

Again, except for one match in that tournament, he was an undisputed starter, as the team took fourth place in Mexico, who has dual Portuguese and Brazilian citizenship, said in October 2013 that he would be willing to represent the Portuguese national team.

Later that month, however, when Luiz Felipe Scolari named his squad for friendly matches against Honduras and Chile to be played that November, he got his first call-up for

Brazil

. On November 17, he made his debut in Miami against Honduras, replacing

David Luiz

for a 5-0 win in the last 20 minutes.

At the 2014 Toulon Tournament, Marquhos played for Brazil under 21 and won the tournament in five games.

Marquinhos returned to the senior side in September 2014 under the new manager, Dunga, after missing the 2014

FIFA World Cup

on home soil. He featured in friendly victories in Miami over Colombia and Ecuador, making his first start against the latter.

For the 2015 Copa América in Chile, his first major international tournament, Marquinhos was included in the Brazilian squad. In their final group match at the Estadio Monumental David Arellano on 21 June, he made his competitive debut and only appearance in the tournament, replacing Robinho for the final 14 minutes of a 2-1 win over Venezuela, which sent Brazil as group winners into the quarter-finals.

In 2016, Marquinhos was named for the Copa América Centenario in the United States in the Brazilian squad, a "experimental" selection lacking his defensive partners in Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago Silva and David Luiz. Before being replaced by Miranda for the last group game, a 1-0 loss to Peru at Gillette Stadium that eliminated his team, he played in the first two games at center-back alongside Gil. He was included in the squad for the team hosting the Olympic tournament later that year, and he scored in the semi-final against Honduras in Rio de Janeiro in an eventual 6-0 win.

Marquinhos captained Brazil for the first time on 10 October 2017 in a 3-0 victory over Chile at Allianz Parque in his hometown with Silva injured. Brazil had already qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the loss ended the qualifying aspirations of the continental champion opponents. He was selected for the final tournament in Russia in May 2018 in Boss Tite's 23-man team, alongside clubmates Silva and Neymar. On 11 September, in a 5–0 friendly victory over El Salvador, he scored his first international goal.

For the 2019 Copa América on home soil, Marquinhos was named in Brazil's 23-man squad in May 2019. Marquinhos was charged with labeling Lionel Messi while suffering from diarrhea in the semi-finals versus Argentina on 2 July. He helped Brazil win a 2-0 victory over their rivals; he went to Miranda in the second half. Marquinhos started in Brazil's 3-1 victory over Peru in the Maracanã Stadium final on 7 July.
