"It’s what I deserved" - Greizmann on angry reception from Atletico fans

Antoine Griezmann admits Atletico Madrid fans were right to be angry with him after his transfer to Barcelona.

After months of speculation over a move to

Barcelona

, Griezman announced in 2018 that he will stay at

Atletico

but just one year later, Barcelona activated his €120m release clause and he left Atletico.

Griezmann

was heavily criticised by Atletico supporters, but he failed to meet the expectations at Barcelona and returned to Atletico on a loan deal in 2021.

At first, he was booed and whistled by Atletico fans at Wanda Metropolitano. Griezmann asked for forgiveness from Atletico fans after the club announced in October that they have reached an agreement with Barcelona over the permanent transfer of him in a deal worth €20 million.

The French international now has admitted Atletico fans were right to be angry with him, and he deserved fan's backlash.

“It [the Barcelona transfer] did a lot of damage to the fans. They gave me everything and in the end I left because that’s what I wanted, what I needed. I as a fan would also have been very angry. It’s what I deserved,"

Griezmann told Movistar.

"I became very humble and I worked to try to change that. Those who know me know that I need this relationship with the fans, I need their love, your support to perform at the highest level.”

Griezmann has scored 8 goals and provided 10 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions this season.
